WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS OF
THE MILITARY INDUSTRIAL

I'm in favor of it, as long as
it's for defense. Other aggresNEVADA COUNTY'S Citizen of the ‘Year has been a farmer most of his adult life, but has
spent as much time off the farm as on, helping the youth of the community through 4-H work,
helping develop Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital and now helping as a director of the district
fair board. Here, Philip L. Personeni and his wife, Johanna, are shown with the chickens on

selfish gains. This is done
mainly through Communist
propoganda to break our defense.
Since we can't protect the entire world we should concentrate’
on our own survival.

soneni' life and activities as
related during the evening:
He arrived in the Colfax area
at age 10 from Northern Italy.
When he began attending school
at Kentucky Flat, his first teacher needed help from two other
children who spoke Italian to
communicate with Personeni,
"Phil did better than I did,"
Mrs. Marie Horn recalled, "I
only learned two words of Italian,
"Philip was a good student...
but mischievous, Icould reminisce and tell a lot of things."
Former classmates did reminisce and tell a lot of things
about Personeni's school days,
including the burro and cart in
which he rode to school and the
wrestling matches held in the
shed in which the burro was
housed, with boys rolling in the

In tribute: after tribute, Philip Personeni was termed an unselfish community servant ashe
was honored as Nevada County's
Citizen of the Year Saturday
night.
Using a "This Is Your Life"
theme, Personeni's friends described, sometimes humorously,
the many organizations in the
Golden Empire in which he has
played major roles.
An Italian immigrant, Personeni rose to become a major
Nevada county rancher, 4-H
leader and hospital director.
Several speakers emphasized
that he has always been willing
to help in whatever way was
needed on a particular project.
Nevada County Historical Society sponsored the event with
Arlie and Syvley Hansen as cochairmen, Master of ceremonies
was Elmer Stevens who commented:
"Not only are we expressing
a@ personal tribute to Phil, but
I think we are affirming our
own faith in the local community, state and nation, There must
be many across the nation who
make their community justa
little better just by being there."
Here is a rundown on Perget back to more civilian cone Phil Personeni honored as
1969 citizen of the year
Nevada Irrigation District. More
than 30 years later, inthe 1950s,
he was a director of NID.
Personeni also worked at
mines in Nevada and Alleghany in
the early 1920s, but in 1924
rented a ranch and started farming. "It was hard work and Phil
needed help, so he decided to get
married," Stevens joked.
With that, his wife, Johanna,
was introduced and her accomplishments were mentioned -15
years on the Kentucky Flat
School board and 20 years as a
4-H leader.
Finally, in 1936, Personeni
became a naturalized citizen of
the United States of America.
"We speak of minority groups,"
Stevens said, "Aren't we all minority groups? This man testifies to the fact that he has taken
citizenship seriously."
Then, speakers outlined Personeni's activities over the past
30 years, perhaps the most
major of which was 4-H work,
He has been a 4-H leader for
15 years with the Kentucky Flat
club and it was noted he annually
hiked youngsters up Red Mountain at Woodchuck 4-H camp, a
hike that was too strenuous for
some.
