AUBURN -Confirmation that the Holbrooke Hotel will come alive and the announcement of a plastic factory which will help the local economic problems were the highlights of a Sierra Economic Development meeting here Monday. These two items, plus the visit of Joseph G, Hamrick from Washington D, C., made the meeting a success for visiting officials from the four-county SEDD district, Nevada, Sierra, Placer and El Dorado counties. Hamrick is the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Economic Development Agency. The famed Holbrooke Fotel in Grass Valley has had its doors open since 1851, At one time it was one of the famous hotels in the west and "it's going to be again" according to . Arletta Douglas, who made the announcement Monday. Mrs. Douglas said "'the money to pick up the option on the Holbrooke Hotel was put in escrow today." She is leading a group of investors who will completely refurbish the Holbrooke and preserve it. "We hope to begin work within 60 days," she said. Present plans call for the Holbrooke to have executive type suites; professional offices; a seven day a week first class dining room, retail offices and a saloon, All the business will be brand new and will create a minimum of 30 new jobs. Mrs. Douglas has worked through SEDD Director Elizabeth George to accomplish the project, e said without the help of SEDD "it never would have been possible." Miss George said it was part _of EDA plans to help people to help themselves, In this case, not one dollar of federal or taxpayers' money will be used. Kt will be done by private investors and at the same time follows the SEDD guidelines to establish jobs where they are needed. Miss George credited the work of her executive directors; President Charles McDermid, Sierra County; Ray Thompson, and David Pollard,. Placer
county; John Weidman, El Dorado; and Sheriff Wayne Brown and Nevada City Mayor John Rankin of Nevada County. In another large development at the meeting Ron Lax, president of the PRE TEM Plastic Co, announced plans to build a factory at Loma Rica Industrial Park. Lax has previously mulled the idea of building on the Litton Property near Crass Valley but said Monday they decided on the industrial site near the Nevada County Airpark. Lax said "we have been looking for nine months for a site and I met Betty George. I was told I would have to build in the SEDD area so I quit looking." Lax said through the efforts of the SEDD office his plans have worked smoothly.
