As vacationers head over Interstate 80 towards Lake Tahoe
and the Sierra Nevada, they pass
through the foothill country. And
when they reach that point where
the valley oak and sycamores
begin to give way to the stands
of pine and fir, they are in the
heart of California's fabulous
gold country.
One of the more active towns
in this region is Grass Valley,
says the California State Automobile Association, Despite its
growth in recent years it retains much of the wistful feeling of that era a century ago:
when mules and men struggled
to find gold far below the rich
red earth,
A good way to begin a tour
of this historic mining town is

A good place to visit
with a visit to the old Felton
Wheel at the foot of Mill Street,
This is a large metal wheel,
thirty feet in diameter, that was
turned by water from high pressure hoses and generated power
for the North Star Mine.
Nearby are the homes of Lotta
Crabtree and Lola Montez, both
in the same block on Mill street
near the center of town. Lola
Montez came from Bavaria in
1853. She was a singer and
dancer who had been a favorite
of the king. She spent twoyears
in Grass Valley during which
time she encouraged a young
neighbor, Lotta Crabtree, in the
arts of singing and dancing,
‘ Lotta went on to become famous
and rich and beloved throughout
America. The Montez home is
open to the public for tours during the summer.
A short distance away from the
town's center is the Empire
Mine, located in a most unusual
setting amidst a park-like pine
forest. It was the largest mine
in Grass Valley and one of the
greatest hard-rock mines in
California, Many ofthe buildings
used during its long period of
operation are still standing, The
Empire had 200 miles of underground workings and one recordbreaking vein was followed for
9,000 feet before it gave out.
There are other mines, too,
that you can visit and poke around
among the old mining equipment
without danger---the IdahoMaryland, the North Star, the
Pennsylvania.
And the fun of Grass Valley
is walking down its quaint
convered sidewalks along the
narrow streets, enjoying the leisurely pace of this old Queen of
Northern Mines region.
