PILES. OF STEAKS went on the fire last Thursday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Friedrich of Nevada City as the winning speakers of the Timber Echoes Toastmistress Club were treated to dinner by the losers. Shown here left to right are Mrs. Jean Shonk, captain of the winning Tongue Benders, club president Mrs. Donna Wadley and Mrs. Emily Turner, captain of the losing Twig Twisters. Regina Gregor Is Christened At St. Patrick’s Catholic Church By Fay M. Dunbar Regina Marie Gregor, daughter of Mr, and Mrs, John Gregor of Lucas Lane, Grass Valley, was christened on Pentecost Sunday May 29, at St. Patrick's Church, Little Miss Gregor was born May 9, 1966. Her mother is the former Kathy Avery of Rough and Ready, The proud grandmother is Mrs, Helen Avery, Rough and Ready Postmaster. ee0eeses Mr, and Mrs, Arnold Turner and son .Danny are vacationing in Oregon. A new vacation trailer precipitated the trip. Youngest daughter, Belinda Turner, is visiting her married sister in southern California, Mrs. Turner is Arvetta of Arvetta's Beauty Shop. They plantogonorth on Highway 101 through the Redwoods and return home on Highway 99. A vacation for the Turners* must include some fishing. i eeecse We often hear that things, good or bad, come on “threes”, This has been true for the Vars family of Rough and Ready, Edward Varsreceived a compound fracture of his leg from an exploding tire which he was inflating. He is resting comfortably in the Sierra Nevada Hospital! where his stay has been necessarily long due toa heart condition, Just a few days prior to Vars’ accident, son David Vars shot himself in the leg while practicing the “Quick Draw", And a couple of days after David's accident, daughter Linda Vars fell from a horse and sprained her hand, Happily everything is quiet at the moment and son Tony Vars is home on leave, from the Job Corp Center in Arizona where he is stationed, e®eeese The most excitement in Rough .andReady these days is the work on Rough and Ready Road, This road was merely an old wagon road back in the gold mining days and was known as the Penna Road until recently, Maud Calvert, old timer of Rough and Ready, says there is a tree beside the road which still bears the scars of a crashing buggy where her horse ran away about 65 or 70 years ago, The road winds back about four miles toward Deer Creek. In the old horse and buggy days the neighbors forded Deer Creek to visit neighbors along the Pleasant Valley Road. Now it is lined with numerous levely homes and dead ends in an old peach orchard. Bringing this narrow winding roadupto modern day standards has upset most of the fences and driveways and even some buildings. When the dust has settled it will be lovely and wide and bare. One of the sacrifices made to this progress has been the wonderful old live Oak, at least a hundred years old, which had almost blocked the entry of the Old Road to Highway 20. Its absence leaves a big desolate hole in the Rough and Ready landscape, eeeeses Don't forget Fathers Day on Sunday, The Rough and Ready Grange has decided, since it remembers Mothers Day with a dinner, that Father must not be forgotten on his day. They will be serving breakfast in the Historic oldhall from 7 a.m. until 11:00 a.m, The public is invited, The menu will be ham and eggs and fruit juice and all the hotcakes you can eat, eeeees The Richard Clintons of Rough and Ready, who recently returned from Bermuda, have just moved into their new home, They built beside lower Squirrel Creek just off the Rex Reservoir Road, Mrs, Clinton says Bermuda was lovely but she is happy to be home and will be glad to get settled in her new house, Mr. Clinton, who works at Beale AFB, was recalled from service in Bermuda due tothe death of his father, --Mr, and Mrs, Clinton are the parents of Diane Clinton who is presently living in Las Vegas, Nevada, Their son and his wife and their young grandson from Hawthorne, California have been visiting here this past week, Chicago Park Club Wins Another Prize The Chicago Park Garden Club has won the $100 Sears award fortheir work at Weimar Medical Center, This was announced at the meeting of the club lastweek in the home of Mrs. Charles Kuhnert. ¥ Mrs, Wyatt J. Thompson talked on the Iris and Mrs. Rudolph Lagrastrom discussed care and culture of day lillies. Mrs. Fred Brandt gave a talk on robins. Social Group Of The Newcomers Meets Tomorrow The Social Group of the Nevada County Newcomers Club willholdtheir monthly meeting at noon Wednesday, June 22 at the Grass Valley Mobile Homes Park on the Auburn Highway south of Grass Valley, Hugh Missner, local architect, will give a brief explanation of the profession of architecture and its potential application in the restoration of Grass Valley. Members should bring sandwich, table service, and chair. Salads and coffee will be served, All newcomers to the area are cordially invited to attend.
