Wherever the Grismer-Davies Company have produced the play in which they will appear at this city Tuesday evening, the press -and people speak of the performance in the most flattering terms. The story of ‘The World Against Her” is long familiar to the stage. , A noble woman, ‘truly in love with her, husband, wrongly “thinks him indifferent to her, and her belief is confirmed by one who formerly but unsuccessfully wooed her. Inthe end suspicion attaches to her, divorce follows, she leaves with—her child; and ~all her friends turn against her upon purely circumstantial evidence. Out of the familiar difficulty she emerges eventually triumphant. Reserved seats can be obtained‘at C. E. Mulloy’s store without extra charge. Change of Railroad Time. Wasuineton, January 8th, 1889. Epiror Tianscrirt=— Mr. Blaine, after having been several times. reported as.on his way to Washington, arrived here last week and is now the guest of Representative William Walter Phelps. His visit here at this time is said to be without political motive, and.only the carrying out of few prominent Republicans now. in Washington who have not called to see bim since-his arrival. Senators Hiscock and. Plumb, who are fresh from a visit to General H. rrison, have had several conferences with Mr. Bla‘ne, and there are any number of rumors in regard to Mr. Blaine’s mak‘ihg a visit to the President-elect. One thing is very noticeable of late, and particularly so since Mr, Blaine came here. That is the very “decided could not do otherwise without putan unmistakable slight upén seventenths of the Republican party. You ask what has brought about this great change? Several things, but first and foremost is the faect-that Senator Sherman, who is perfectly satisfied with making a-fight against Mr. Blaine, . and the small number of anti-Blaine Republicans are therefore losing no time ‘in joining the big procession. Still all this does not. prove that:Mr. Blaine will be the ‘next Secretary of State: He may declinethe place if it be offered him. _ Many think he would not accept it. . > The Senate bill incorporating he Nicaragua Canal Company has beén passed by the House with several amendments, and is now in the hands of a conference committee. The bill as passed by the House incorporates a private company for the construction and-operation-of a ship canal from the Atlantic to the Pacific ocean, though Nicaragua or Costa Rica. The company is authorized to issue bonds secured by mortgage on its property and rights; must have its principal office New, York City, and a majority its directors, fifteen in number, must ‘Mines and: Mining Friday to discuss the Mining bill, the Senate last April. At Saturdi@y’s session of the Sacramento Superyisors C. FE, Grunsky and L. F. Bassett presented reports concerning visits of inspection they had made, by order.of the Board,-to-a-restraining dim on Bear river, constructed by the Liberty Hill Mining Company at a point near Dutch Fiat, about 1,000 feet below the mouth of straining the flow of mining debris, I found to'be practically at au end, as the reservoir, caused by the construction of the dam, is filled with mining debris to a level with the outlet or bottom-of the waste way. “In fact, very coarse sand could be seenrolling} along in the bottom of tha water flowing through the-waste way and. being discharged into the river below the dam; and this notwithstanding the volume of water flowing at the time the complete filling of the reservoir old mining tailings lodged in the can yon above the dam, through the waste way. At the time the dam was constructed: it was represented that the reserveir capacity created thereby would be sufficient te hold the. tailings from the Liberty Hill mine for a long périod— one engineey estimating the time at eight years’ continuous running of the mine and another.at twenty years. The mine was operatéd only a few weeks alter this dam. was constructed ; but three years have elapsed since that time, and yet the dam is already filled ‘to overflowing—the washingdown of the old tailings lodged in the canyons during the operations of the mine in the years preceding the construction of the dam, having alone been sufficient to effect the result. Had the mine continued in operation jpuld undoubtedly have resulted in a ew months, as the tendency is for the filling to take place back from the dam nearly ona level, after which only the coarser portions of the thining debris is restrained.” Bassett further states that he has twice visited the Liberty Hill mine, seen it-in operation, examined the banks, and is of the opinion that fully sulted in a disagreement: of the jury, ‘HERE AND THERE.
