The future recrational uses
of a 16,000 acre Grouse Ridge

study which Tahoe National Forest has launched,
‘The area is located on the
western slope ofthe Sierra

unimproved sites has been limited to four wheel drive clubs
and other conservation minded
groups and individuals, Branagh

Deer hunting and fishing are
the two main wildlife activities,
There are numerous furbearers
of the area, Branagh said,
He cited reduction of thenumber of cattle, shorter permitted
grazing ‘periods, and banning of ©
sheep as improving conditions
of the meadows, :
The forest service concluded
the presentation with ‘slides

Hal Cox, county sanitarian,

the back country enthusiast,
Henry Branagh, forest supervisor said,
The TNF supervisor explained the purpose of the study
at a public meeting hosted by
TNF last week in the Nevada
City Veterans building, He invited public participation in deciding the destiny within a defined boundary.
More than 175 recreational
conscious people from here,
Sacramento, Auburn and other
points were present, They questioned and commented on proposed future uses, Some participating in the discussion identified themselves as belonging
to the Four-Wheelers,
Pacific Gas andElectricCom-.

Company and Nevada Irrigation
District share ownership of the
acreage with TNF, Branagh said
the forest service consulted with
the private owners before beginning the study,
Recreational use has greatly
increased in recent years and
TNF officials believe it is time
to determine what changes, if
any, are needed in forest service management of the area,
Branagh said,
"Possibilities are many,"
Branagh said, He cited them as
ranging from full access development to provide for facilities
such as roads, resorts, etc. to
the restricted uses such as day
and foot and horse travel.
The fact sheet shows that
the study derives its name from
Grouse Ridge, on the southwest
boundary, and the numerous
lakes (some 70)within and adjacent to it,
Elevation. varies from 5,200
feet at Fordyce Creek to 8,000
feet atop of Black Buttes, Most
is above 6,800 feet. The ter~
rain is generally moderate with
steeper slopes adjacent to isoldted peaks dispersed throughout,
Land ownership divided into

NID, 1,000 acres; Southern Pacific, 6,300 acres, and PG&E,
300 acres,
There is good access over
unpaved roads to the boundary
line, Access within is now limited to low standard four-wheel
drive trails and a network of .
foot, bike and horse trails,
which are of poor quality.
There are five improved recreation sites outside the boundary, but none inside,
However, there are numerous unimproved camping sites
within the baqundaries, which -do

The audience aired its views

"As we restrict usage does
it intensify problems in other
recreational areas?"
"Has or would the state consider establishing a type of
tax relief for the private owners, so that the land could remain undeveloped?"
"Rather than restricting vehicle use wouldn't it be prefKt is not our intent to develop before the study is completed," said Leon Sanford
Sanford indicated the . railroad company has considered
establishing a "holding area”
for campers and trailers along
the fringe of the perimeter.
"We firmly believe that forest service business is public
business, It is our hope that
you will take the necessary time
to become involved in the analysis of this truly scenic
area," Branagh said,
