Landmark
The pioneer tollhouse at Freeman's Crossing.on the Middle
Yuba River has been restored,
renovated, and re-opened as a
modern hostelry.
This is the second year of operation for Hugh Harris's imaginative conceived resort, set deep
in a typically precipitous Sierra
fiver canyon.
Beginning late in 1962, Harris
took the great barn -like tollhouse
structure, through which travellers. from Nevada City passed in
their wagons en route to eastern
points more than a century ago,
and recreated its original character, with restaurant and bar on
one side of the central passageway, and sleeping rooms on the
other.
The history of the crossing dates
from 1850, when a Mr. Nye of
Marysville pioneered the route
and ran a ferry at the crossing.
Soon after he sold the crossing to
Matthew Spack, who built a hotel
and bridge at the site. Tom Freeman, withhisblind wife, bought
the property in 1853 and set about
improving the hotel and bridge.
(He also built the Oregon Creek
covered bridge, which stands less
than a mile away from the tollhouse. )
Subsequently the hotel burned
down several times, and the
bridge washed out several times.
The remnants of the early structures were ultimately sold to
Harris's father in 1942, for a summer home.
Sven Skaar of Nevada City,
goldrush historian and collector,
helped Harris to locate appropriate furnishings and to plan his
restoration to be in keeping with
‘the original decor.
