First graders
at St. Mary’s
do well in test
The results of the Scholastic Testing Service (STS) examinations given the first graders at Mt. St. Mary's have been
received and the scores emphasize the success of the nongraded reading program which
was initiated during the past
year.
The first grade reading groups
number three, with seven
students in the first group, 11
in the second or average group
and five in the thrid group.
Scores (grade level rankings)
on the tests which measured
comprehension and vocabulary
ranged from first grade through
fourth with all but five of the
23 placing at the second grade
level or above, Two students
received fourth grade reading
level scores (4.2, 4.0) and three
others ranked at the third grade
level (3.8, 3.2, 3.0). Group one
received scores ranging from
2.6 (second grade, sixth month)
to 4.2, The reading level for
group two was 2.0 to 2.4. Group
three's scores ranged from 1.5
to 1.8,
Sister Mary Lenora, who has
taught first grade at Mt. St.
Mary's for the past two years,
will continue to use the Hippincott Series of textbooks for her
advanced reading group next
year and plans to extend its use
to the average group.

heart group veep
Willard Rose of Nevada City
was elected one of the five vice
presidents of the SacramentoYolo-Sierra Heart Association
at the 18th annual meeting held
recently at the El Macero Country Club.
Another Grass Valleyan,
Rosemary Decker, was elected
to the board of directors, Dr.
C. Jackson Rayburn of Grass
Valley, was renamed a director.
During recognition ceremonfes three special awards were
presented to outstanding volunteers, one of whom was Willard
Rose. He received a distinguished service medallion in recognition of his service as SYSHA
president during the past year.

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints conducted funeral services Wednesday for 1st
Lt. Kenneth W. Scurr, killed
May 31 in Vietnam.
Leonard Prisk sang "The
Lord's Prayer" with Dorothy
Kitts playing the organ accompaniment. Pallbearers were
Paul Atkinson, Stanley Cummins, Gary Degraffenreid, Del
Videgain, Steve Castagna and
Gary Elam.

A full military funeral with a
honor from the
Presidio of San Francisco was
held Wednesday for Spec.
4 Michael D, Goeller, killed
June 1 in Vietnam.
Chaplain Francis Shroyer
from Beale Air Force Base conducted the service at Hooper
and Weaver Chapel, The honor
guard acted as pallbearers and
conducted the burial rites at
Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

the three committee members before Tuesday as the ticket
sale starts Wednesday.
Contract for Cascade
Shores pipeline given
United Technology Center, the
low bidder to furnish pipeline
in the Cascade Shore area was
awarded the contract by the
Nevada Irrigation District board
of directors Wednesday.
Total cost of furnishing the
pipeline was $325,067.90. The
contract was awarded subject
to approval by the Bureau of
Reclamation.
Bids will be let in the near
future for installation of the
13,700 feet of pipeline. Total
cost for the Cascade water
system will be $1,200,000,
The construction is. part of
public law 984, a Bureau of Reclamation loan approved by voters
last November.
In other board action the purchasing department was authorized to purchase a 10-wheel
flatbed truck in the amount of
$10,000 and to call for bids on.
four pickups, two standard and
two four-wheel drives.
The board voted to combine
the offices of assessor-collector
-treasurer. This function presently consists of two offices under Bob Enright and Al Scurr.
The action will be effective at
the end of the present contract,
in November.
Roy McDowell appeared befor the board asking for consideration of NID taking over the
private pipeline at Bear River
Pines subdivision, He said the
subdivision had inquired intothis
matter four years ago and as
yet no formal action has been
taken.
NID manager Frank Clendenen
said the line would be too costly
to take over and that there-are
many other private lines in the
district that would be costly for
NID to take over.

Objections heard
on sex education
Two women voiced their objections to sex education taught
in Nevada City schools, through
letters read to the governing
board Wednesday evening.
Marge Allstot, in her letter
to the board, said she objected
to the three films she and six
other mothers saw last week.
The three films are part of
five which are shown students at
Seven Hills School, during their
courses on growth and development, Mrs, Allstot's letter indicated.
Her letter stated that the sex
education taught in the schools
was directly responsible for the
rise ‘in the number of people
afflicted with venerial disease.
Mrs. Jewel Reynolds read a
to the State Board of Education.
