Numerous tires were blown, and spills recorded, as the race temperature approached 100 degrees Sunday. Parsons Takes First In Spectacular Race NEVADA CIT Y---The Third Annual Tour of Nevada City provided the most spectacular bicycle race yet for an appreciative and warm audience of more than 2500 Sunday. Bob Parsons, of La Canada, Calif., came from half a lap behind in the final ten miles of the 45 mile race to win the event with ease. Parsons overtook Dave Capron, Mountain View 17-year-old, who seemed to have the victory assured after he and Ramond An_ drews, Menlo Park, broke from the pack and built up a sizeable lead. Capron, whotook second place last year in the Junior race, kept up his blistering pace and left Andrews behind, But the pace was too much for the young lad, and when Pan-American Games star Parsons pressed with a burst of speed, Capron could keep pace with his challenger only for a few laps. For Parsons, it was a great victory. He had won the race to Colfax Saturday, beating Bob Tetzlaff and other top riders in the process. : Parsons became the man in Nevada City who took the crown from two-time winner Tetzlaff, bike speedster from Los Gatos. The defending champ had trouble on the course this year. He was forced to change wheels during the race when his gear sprocket failed him, and he took one spill that held him up additional time:-In spite of this, the Los Gaton picked up eighth place in the race, Tetzlaff was not the only rider to suffer problems during the race. a There were numerous blowouts, the extreme heat of the day taking a heavy toll of bike tires that are normally inflated to high pressure for less. road friction.
And the spills were numerous, though none resulted in injury. And the spectators made their usual treks across the course, with the normal close calls that result from a 40 -mile-an-hour bicyclist bearing down on a suddenly frightened target. Officials of the ABL called the race “excellent”, and even the 90 degree official temperature whichwas more like 100 degrees onthe course did not dampen the enthusiasm of rider and spectator. Ian Mahon, Canadian representative at the Pan-American Games, followed Parsons and Capron tothe finish line, and paid tribute to the race of the champion. Andrews was able to maintain (Continued on Page 19) the bill through the Senate Natural Resources Committee, which recorded a unanimous "do pass” vote. The bill now proceeds to the Senate “consent calendar," and a final vote of the full senate is }expected Thursday or Friday. Cameron expects the resolution to pass barring unforeseen obstacles, TELL SEE EL EE ELD LL ALES Mayor Robert Carr of Nevada City said this morning that if the Malakoff legislation passes, he would like to lead a “limousine tour" to North Bloomfield to show that contrary to popular opinion, the roadsto the park site are safe and well graded. "Some people seem to think youcan only get there by jeep, " Carr said. To prove his point, Carr proposes to take his own car, which he describes as "the lowest in the county." He would like the. "tour" to arrive at the proposed park in time for lunch. He did not say whether he would provide the lunch, Last week, Assemblyman Paul Lunardi obtained Assembly passage of the resolution, He is author of the bill, and Cameron is coauthor. A further boost for Nevada. County's Malakoff project is also under consideration by a joint Senate-Assembly conference committee, the Nugget learned. Under the proposed $19 million state park land acquisition bill now before the legislature, there is a movement afoot to return the Malakoff project to the priority list of land to be purchased, on a “first alternate" basis, (Continued on Page 2) YUBA BEAR WOTZO9S ST BOTPOTIed GREE ME NT See Page 4 : Aawagyy 03848 * 311 ¥D , Selby Flat, Grizzly Indian Flat, Bridgeport, Birchville, Moore's Flat, rl
