Sheeley Americanism Chairman for the State Department of the American Legion spoke before the Rough and Ready Chamber Meeting last Thursday night about "Our Flag", His underlying theme was patriotism. He spoke on the real meanings of the Pledge of “~ Allegiance, gave the 191 year history of "Old Glory", and concluded with the role of Patriotism in some of todays problems. Mr. Sheeley was accompanied by his wife Paula, The group met at the old (1858) Rough and Ready School House where five generations of Rough and Ready children learned these values of which Mr. Sheeley spoke. * kK Bill Thomas Chairman o. the Secession Days Committee innounced at the last meeting the: e will be just three more Secession Day meetings before the big event July 4th. There was entertainment by members of the cast of "Never Come Never Go", delicious food and a most informative and humerous account of interesting 4th of July parades of the past in Nevada county, by parade chairman Lynn Bramkamp as well as installation of Nevada City chambe: officers, OK OK Mr. and Mrs. William Doctor and daughter Cheryl celebrated Father's Day wit: a delightful overnight camping . *ip to Washington (Nevada Cou.:ty). Once a month during the milder seasons of the year the Caravan Club of the Sacramento group of the National Order of Independent Foresters of America, to which the doctors belong, select some spot to spend a pleasant weekend together. This time it was Washington. This same group, about 40 people in all, plan to spend July 4th at the Secession Day Celebration in Rough and Ready. They visited here last November and lunched in the old hall as guests of the doctors who had arranged for a tour of the area to be conducted by the chamber of commerce. This had to be replaced by an indoor program due to inclement weather. The program which was of Rough and Ready's history, seems to have interested them ‘ in seeing more of us, We plan to show them a_ grand time on the 4th, * * Ruby and Harold Hooker, partners in the Rough and Ready Mobile Homes Park and staunch boosters of our community, have been visiting the Roy Bradleys this past week, The foursome enjoyed a trip to Oregon over the week-end. * kk * Mr, and Mrs. Bruce Davison and family spent the Father's Day weekend in Anaheim visiting family and old friends, * Ok O&K One voter who helped make Rough and Ready's good turnout for the primary elections was Chief Pumpman, Elwood F. Hatfield. He "sweat it out" all the way home from Alaska. Getting home to vote is not easy the Merchant Marine, Mr, Hatfield has served through WW2, Korea, the Suez Crisis and now Vietnam.
* Mr. T. B. Broadus celebrated Father's Day with both children and grandchildren. Marie Broadus helped make the’ occasion more festive by baking lots of goodies. Included in the family party were Mr. and Mrs, Bails of Tacoma, Washington, who were here visiting their daughter, Mrs, Jane Broadus of Auburn. The Bails are taking their two grandchildren Suzette, 4, and Alley, 6, home with them for a short visit, There will be lots of cousins in Tacoma for the children to play with and they also plan to attend Bible school. He began with PG&E in 1926 as a meter readLARRY FARRELL Rebekah Lodge Esther Rebekah Lodge No. 9, of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, met June 8 with Noble Grand Lura Arnold presiding. An invitation was sent to Fern Ishmael, newly elected warden of the Rebekah Assembly, to make an official visit to Esther Rebekah Lodge December 14. Sybil Ridinger, newly appointed District Deputy President of District 21, will make her first social visit to the Lodge at 8 p.m. July 13, The birthdays of June & Charles Engle, Laura Carlson and James Arnold were celebrated. The delegates to Rebekah Assembly, Sybil Ridinger, Gladys Clemo, Emily Hodgkin & Zale Johnson made their reports. It was announced that Emily Hodgkin was appointed as Area Chairman of Area 3 on New Membership. June Engle told of the movie of the Eye Bank and Charles Engle reported on the movie about the building and showing the floats at the Rose Parade in Pasadena, Francis Kitts, Esther McCandless and Marie Johnson were. appointed on the refreshment committee for the June 22 meeting. Delicious refreshments were served after the meeting by Luella Kerr, Susan Stroud and Laura & Martin Carlson. Mrs. Wasley to head NC Soroptimists Georgine Wasley will be seated as president of the Nevada City Soroptimist Club at a dinner meeting slated for Thursday evening in the National Hotel dining room. Past presidents Pauline Bergemann and Louise Polglase will install Mrs. Wasley and other officers who are, La Moyne Dark, vice president; Alice McGee, treasurer; Totts Abersold, recording secretary; Dolores Hoffler, corresponding secretary. A 6:30 social hour will precede the dinner and installation. Mrs. Marie. Novak is the retiring president. The club celebrated April, May, and June birthdays at a luncheon meeting held Wednesday in the hotel. Elsie Nile announced the life members of the club will purchase a flag for the group. Life members are Mrs, Nile, Marguerite Gentili and Mary Moser. Teresa Cassettari, service Objectives chairman, reported the club has spent more than $1,600 on community projects which include radios for the volunteer fire department, a hydraulic lift chair for the general hospital, and a donation for improvements at Pioneer Park.
