The American Society of Civil Engineers, a 68,000-member professional society, made the designation which honors Lester Allen Pelton (1829-1908), the inventor of this water wheel. The Pelton Impulse Water Wheel, the name that it is known by the world over, is distinguished for its high efficiency while using small volumes of water. It was during the winter of 1877-1878 that Lester Pelton, developed the first model of this hydraulic impluse wheel. Today his discovery is used throughout the world for developing water power. California’s gold rush in 149 brought need for mining machines. Many water wheels of low efficiency were developed and patented but in 1880 Pelton’s high efficiency water wheel was patented. The high efficiency was due to the use of the first splitter type bucket used on a water wheel. The splitter bucket divided in two parts the jet stream of water at contact with the water wheel and provided much more power than a single bucket or cup attached to the wheel. The latter was used in New England where water used for power was not under such high pressure as in the west, with its high At North Star Mine Powerhouse, Grass Valley, California, a 18 foot 6 inch Pelton Wheel, weighing 10,000 pounds tan for 30 years pumping 1,000. gallons of water every minute from the mine. and developed the lakes and reservoirs, constructed po plants which were a key element in the development of the vast water power of the western part of the country. At a later date a bronze plaque will be placed by the professional society on a monument located’ near highway route 49 in Camptonville, Calif. The location perfected his invention. Smith several days ago, and is pleased to reproduce it in its entirety as follows: “T enjoy what you have to day in the Nevada County Nugget. Can you tell me about what year the Red Gothic Castle was built? I am doing a painting of it from a post card and would like to use a few figures in the foreground in costumes of the period. “I have always hoped that the Nugget would publish something about The Deacon’s Follylocated in the Rodda pear orchard at Grass Valley. I believe it was the beginning of a seminary and the money gave out and it was never finished. In about 1902 the Empire Mine Co. bought it for the granite. My Mother felt at the time it should have remained as a monument. “I was born in Grass Valley on what is now Linden Avenue, in 1894.” r : Thanks, NORMAN D. EDWARDS 14256 Dyer Street Sylmar, CA $1342 Dear Mr. Edwards: In answer to your question about the Red Castle, we quote the following paragraph from “Gold Cities” by Jim Morley and Doris Foley: “Perched precariously on Prospect Hill is this dramatic brick house known as the Red Castle. Built in 1857 by Squire John Williams for his son Lorin, lawyer and mining man of promise, the Castle was the scene of many social : Young Williams, a Leet sy the local band, enjoyed serenading townfolk on Sundays by teoting his cornet on the veranda, the vibrant notes floating over a citizenry going its ways or that information will be helpful to yeu in developing your painting, Mr. Edwards: and, in a later issue of the Nugget we shall publish the story of “The Deacon’s Folly.”
