Wahington has a new look--The first building seen as you
enter town has always been our
little post office, It's still in
the same place, but now stands
out with its new red and white
paint job. it is the biggest improvement the "down-town" area
has had in a long time.
The Washington District
Council is also fixing up the
town by making improvements
in the little park. A rock wall
has been constructed at the base
of the flag pole and petunias have
been planted as well as new
erass, Every little bit helps the
appearance of the town.

The Washington County Water
District Board of Directors held
its regular monthly meeting last
Friday night, At this meeting
it was announced by president
Rod Stewart, that director Howard Vance has been forced to
resign from the board due to
health reasons. Nominations
were opened for a replacement
and were continued until next
month's meeting.
Other business of the board
was the vote on the budget for
the next fiscal year. Each item
of the budget was voted on, The
result is a lower tax per $100.00
assessed valuation, for the tax
payers within the water district.
On Sunday morning another
problem for the water district
was discovered. The ditch which

along Maybert Road did not have
enough water in it to supply
these users. Investigators discovered that the entrance to the
ditch at Canyon Creek had been
blocked by large rocks. There
was no evidence of a land slide,
so it is assumed that the blockage was the result of vandals,

The Stewart family has just
returned from a trip to other
parts of California. We traveled
highway 20 to the coast then
north to Eureka area for fishing.
One of the highlights. was a
visit to a large sawmill. All
my life has been spent here in
a lumbering area and Ihad never
before seen how the logs became
2X 4's and such.
In Fort
mill formerly known as the Union
Lumber Company,now owned and
operated by. Boise Cascade.
Every weekday at 2:00 p.m. a
guide takes people through the
mill. First we saw the lags
lifted off the trucks by large
cranes, They then go under a
high pressure water hose to remove the bark. The log then
goes into the mill pond or on to
the saws. The logs go back and
forth through the saws on a rig
built on rail road tracks. Iam
sure all these things have special
names. Our guide could not talk
to us about them because of the
noise made by the saws. Wehad
to just watch and read the few
signs along the walk was high aboveall the activity of the mill.
It was very interesting to see
how one of our bigtrees becomes
the lumber that we build our
homes with,
