When the riders appeared around the final turn to the courthouse, it was clear that Fisk had gained a slight advantage. He held it to the finish, The victory for Fisk turned briefly to dismay as spectators crowding to see the finish moved onto the road, An unknown person stepped in front of the San Francisco rider, causing the winner to take a bad spill, He was stunned and layed on the ground for over a minute before recovering. Bleeding from the left arm and minus skin on his left shoulder, Fisk-was soon all smiles, The 30-year-old winner told the crowd "I have never been happier in my life, This has got to be the most wonderful bicycle . race in the United States," Fisk was all smiles as he joked with the crowd and acsepted the roses from 4th of July queen candidate Dorinda Yobles, He blamed the spill after the race on himself, "I ‘was too excited," he said, ° Fisk is a San Francisco caryenter, He has been racing for five years and this race was his rviggest win, He was followed by Geoffrey 3. Conley, Sacramento; Richard 3araona, Daly City; Peter R. Yella Santa, Reno; Davis ind Harry Morton, Bakersfield, Davis, the 20-year-old Neva_ja City youth, went right to the yont and changed leads with
the top riders, He had finished sixth in his first year and 10th fast year. ' He said Fisk won the race o! ‘he uphill stretch on the last ap. "He went like crazy," Javis said, ‘Davis stayed with the winner gj ym the uphill portion but the ~ rough grind took its toll, His muscles tightened in his legs and. he was unable to peddle soming down Broad Street, At ‘his point the other four riders yassed him, They never passed Fisk. Pream winners were Warren <ernan, Davis and Della Santa, Dave Brink, winner of the Vevada :City race three years ago made his first<start this year, He finished 10th, far back of the leaders. Brink was a member . of the 1968 Olympic team, : Ross Darnel, Victoria, B.C., was one of the unfortunate ones, Qarnel was with the lead pack, A person trying to take a photo stepped in his way, causing Dar1el to take’ a bad spill and putting him out of the race. The race was ran in quick, efficient manner. Soon as the race was over the prizes were ven, ; The 10-mile junior race was won by Dan Brown of Reno, Brown outsprinted Allen Burney of Napa to win the event. Johnson asks for hearing on Flag Day bill . WASHINGTON, D. C. — Congressman Harold T. (Bizz) Johnson, co-sponsor of legislation to have Flag Day declared a national holiday, used the occation of Flag Day 1971 to urge the House of Representatives’ Committee on Judiciary to call for hearings on the legislation. In a-letter to Congressman Emanuel-Celler of New York, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Representative Johnson explained the legislation which he and 68 others had co-sponsored, calls. for special recognition of our Flag. — "Tt was. 194 years ago that our original predecessors, the Continental Congress adopted the Flag of the. United States to be the emblem by which Americans throughout the world would identify ourselves," Congressman Johnson wrote to: Chairman Celler. "This flag shows the spirit of a free nation which in five years will celebrate its 200th anniversary. Should we not honor this flag, under which generations have fought and died to preserve the freedom for which it stands?"
