Malakoff Park Project Moving Forward (Continued from Page 1) stood and what were the prospects for the future, Hatch was, and still is, one of the most enthusiastic supporters of the Malakoff Park. First, the $550,000 budget for property acquisition in 1963 is Still available and is being used to cover costs of acquisition and actual purchase of property within the park area, The proposed ‘park is officially now part of the state park system and officials are anxious to acquire enough property to guarantee the site and make enough land available to start constructing facilities, At the present time the state has just one piece of property, a home in the town of North Bloom=field, but Hatch expects the land logjam to break soon with acquisition of land owned by San Juan Gold comprising about 50 per cent of the total park area, and about 1, 000 acres under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management, There are no hard plans for Malakoff yet because there is still no real park land in existence. But the state is looking forward to this eventuality and the current state budget contains a salary item for three people for Malakoff. Hatch explained that staff could go to the park earlier than July when the funds become available but none of the three budgeted positions will be filled until there is enough land in state hands to justify their existence on the land. When that happens, and it could be in a matter of weeks or months, if some of the acquisition goes to condemnation as it seems it will, Beaches and Parks will put some staff members on the park site, probably in the one house now owned by the state in the town of North Bloomfield, Whether there are one, two, or three, the park officials will have a number of duties. They will be responsible for fire protection, REMODEL Furnish Everything: Designing .-Materiais = 3. Financing a 5. Construction BUILDERS & CONSUMERS LUMBER COMPANY G. V.-N. C. Highway At Glenbrook Phone 273-6105 controlof the state land, preparation of state fire plans in coordination with forest service plans and preparation and retum ‘toSacramento of planning information, There is nothing else in the current proposed budget for Malakoff except the three personnel items, but a Beaches and Parks study of the proposed park scheduled for completion Oct. 1, willhelp determine if the Malakoff will be eligible for funds under the $150 million state beaches and parks bond issue approved by the voters last year. But the money for acquisition of enough land to make the park a reality is available and acquisition is proceeding at its natural, if slow, pace. Again, although no hard plans are available, Hatch is excited about Malakoff. He said the Malakoff, with its hydraulic diggings, lake and nearby town, is the greatest natural park he has ever seen in the state and he has put quite a few of them together in California.
He becomes animated when he talks of Malakoff. He talks of the possibility of obtaining old hydraulic mining equipment, gunniting a portion of the Malakoff cliffs and having a continuous flow of water coming from an old monitor to show the visitors how the miners turned the earth upside down in search of gold, He talks of installation of water and sanitary facilities, of con_to put something on," struction of picnic grounds, and ane sites, exterior repair to the buildings in North Bloomfield and of much more, There is no total figure yet available forthe final completed park, but Hatch estimated that public demand will create the need and in 20 years the state will ‘have $4-5 million invested. in Malakoff. Much of this will be expended for construction of initial water and sanitary facilities. When can Nevada County residents and visitors drive to the Malakoff and expect to find the usual type of park facilities awaiting them? “As soon as we get enough land Hatch said, pip If you're angry, upset, Emotions interfere with driving or tired, don't drive. “we will put something on it. will be of an informal nature, ‘a sabi pare there will be some picnicking and probably some rough camping G OLD facilities, " Ww. J. SMIT When this will take place is Jeweler anybody's guess. Itcould be this . 218 proadSt, N.C summer or it could be many months away, What is important is ‘that money is available for land acquisition, land acquisition negotiations are § underway, andthe Malakoff State Park is no longer a matter of wishful discussion in and around Nevada County, but a matter of state policy in the overall plan of acquisition and development of parks, simplicity ... ready to serve you day or night PLUG UP THE HOLES IN YOUR INSURANCE!
