Winner John Howard just crossed the finish line and can be seen riding at the end of the crowd. National champion John Howard NATIONAL CHAMP JOHN Howard of Springfield, Mo,, crosses the finish line with the usual victory sign. Howard, with a super effort, almost lapped the entire field twice. Howard made the trip out from. Springfield, Missouri, by plane, and brought first class credentials with him: The "National Champion." And the national champ made’ quick. believers out of an estimated crowd of 3,000 in Nevada City Sunday. He immediately vaulted to the front and with a super effort lapped the ‘ entire pack of the best riders in the western United States. Howard lapped all riders at the halfway point. “He went on to pour it on and lapped almost all of the riders twice. In all 62 riders started in the senior division, The temperature was over 90 and less than 20 riders finished-the gruelling race, The national champion was in splendid condition. Howard, since winning the national championship in 1968, was the top performer for the United States in the 1968 Olympics. He has continued to improve and hopes are high in the bicy_ cle circles that. Howard may, be the first winner in the Olympics in a bicycle event for the United States. Race official Charlie Allert said Howard “is the first rider to run away with the race in Nevada City in such a convincing manner." The Missouri boy was a late entry. Howard said "I decided a few days ago I would make
the trip out. This is a novelty race, well thought of, so I decided I would give it a whirl." Howard told The Union "I was impressed with this race and the people in the area. The crowd cheered me on and everyone here treated: me swell," The large crowd which was oriented to the hometown entry of. Don Davis cheered Howard and _all the riders who finished the race. Howard put on a super effort and the crowd showed its appreciation. Davis finished a distant 10th, But: all rider finished distant to Howard. The Nevada City youth was nursing a pulled muscle in his knee, ~ In the junior division Dan Brown of Reno’ continued his winning ways, pulling out of the pack to win in a sprint for the +p nites ie rans as ee finish. The riders came from various locations. to compete in the race sponsored by the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce. Prizes were handed out to the riders finishing in the top 10 immediately following the race. The crowd sought shelter in the. shade and no incidents have been reported by the Nevada City Police Department. The top 10 finishers in the senior .division: 1, John Howard, Springfield, Mo. 2.
