A small lake, not visible, borders the westbound lane at the summit. This picture is taken from the eastbound parking turnout, looking north to Castle Peak. Elevation is 7,240, about 150 feet higher than the old summit on U.S. 40--and about two miles north of the historic route. A NEW SIGHT FOR TRANS-SIERRA TRAVELLERS will be West Lake, which borders the freeway on the south side, east of the summit. A Sleek $15 Million Dollar Road The State Division of Highways gave the Nevada County planning commission a preview tour across the new Donner Pass Highway a week ago, and most members agreed the sleek new $15 million road would have been a breeze even for the wagons of the unfortunate Donner Party. Francis Longo, Truckee member of the commission, arranged the tour, which was part of the commission's study of scenic highways in the county. The study will lead to the making of recommendations to the county board of supervisors for scenic highway zoning. These pictures will give you some idea of what lies in store for you as you traverse the new summ it freeway--merely the latest in a long series of engineering feats along the most celebrated transcontinental route in America.
