an historically important series of articles
in 1951 titled '100 Years of Nevada County."" These vignettes of our Golden Empire
then were compiled into a book, only a
few of which remain today. Because of
local interest in things historical, the

ensuing weeks and encourages its readers to clip the stories and keep them

Nevada county began May 18, 1851,
"This day of our Lord, May 18, 1951,
Nevada county observes the one hundredth
anniversary of its creation by the legislature of California in session at San
Jose. The bill to create Nevada county
by dividing Yuba county had been introduced the previous Feb. 7 by District
Assemblyman Field and was passed by the
lower house. It was tabled for. three
‘passage by the senate, and ~menths~—beforesignature by the governor, John McDougal.
While the bill was in a status quo in
the senate, the citizens of Nevada county,
growing impatient with delay, sent Mr.
Anderson and Mr. Wadsworth to San Jose
to urge immediate action. Complaints were
constant of the inconvenience of traveling
to Marysville for court actions, and other
county government activities.
Today Nevada county looks forward
with hope and,.fortitude, two qualities
necessary for the founding, settling and
developing of Nevada county in the past,
present and future.
The brave men who emigrated across
towering mountains, who endured hostile
Indians, disease and the urge to turn back
to the civilized east, built a great county
and a great state.
They were giants--the weaklings were
weeded out and the cowards never started.
They have been called barons, rapists of
natural resources of an untamed wilderness, but nevertheless thev were giants.
They improvised and they invented, Nevada
county has given to the world the long
tom, ground sluicing that developed into
hydraulic mining, and the discovery of
gold in quartz produced development and
improvement of milling machinery. The
Pelton wheel was invented in the Camptonville area.
The pioneers built flumes to transport
water great distances, acrossdeep gorges,
along the sides of cliffs, and tunneled
' through the ground. The pioneers hacked
trails and roads along the steep banks of
the gorges of the Yuba River branches,
and raised the capital and built the 22mile Nevada County Narrow Gauge railway.
Nevada county looks forward with hope
and confidence to its new century and to
the centuries’ beyond, hope and confidence
born of the treasure in its great natural
advantages--the magnificent scenery, innumerable lakes. giant forests, fighting
trout and countless wild life -resources
that make Nevada county the playground of
California and the west."
