Spring Tree Planting Program Terminated NEVADA CITY--The T ahoe National Forest Spring tree planting program has been brought to a close with the advent of the summer sunny weather, F orest Supervisor H, E, (Hank) Branagh announced today. This program was the largest one ever attempted on this National Forest and ranks among the all time high of any forest in the California Region. Statistics on the program are somewhat staggering. Some 2,390 acres were prepared for the planting of 1,024,000 trees. A planting force reached the peak of 133 persons. A newly developed mechanical planter was used constantly as well as "Little
Beavers’ (mechanical diggers carried by a two man planting team). Nine contracts were issued to tree planting firms. Four Tahoe forest crews worked with the mechanical planter, Little Beavers and hand tools. Of the trees planted, 932,000 were Ponderosa Pine, 70,00 Sugar Pine; 20, 000 DouglasFir, and 2,000 were Sierra Sequoias, planted near Foresthill. Plantings were madein the following areas: Foresthill , 476,000 trees; Camptonville, 162,000 trees; Truckee, 156,000 trees; Sierraville 164,000 trees, and on the Nevada City district, 46, 000 trees, Trees were planted by the planting machine on 434 acres; the Little Beaver mechanical planter was used on 200 acres; and hand planting was done on 1,754 acres, Supervisor Branagh stated that this years planting weather and ground conditions were nearly perfect. "We expect a high survival percentage” Branagh said “andif the 'normal' summer and fall weather prevails, these newly planted trees should get an excellent start for survival". However the final budget figure remainedthe same, $480,362.35 Jim Penaluna, a worker on thecity crew, and spokesman for the crew, appeared before the council and pointed out thatifthe$5 per month raise for the group went into effect next year thatthe men would actually have less take home pay per month. He suggested instead that the Council comply with the original request and grant $15 per month raise. But if the budget could not be stretched thatthe city crew would accept a legal holiday every time the City Hall closed, and would be willing to give up the $5 raise. After lenghty discussion the council determined that the workers would be able tohave all days off that the City Hall” is closed, with the exception of emergency work, and still have the $5 raise. The second protest was lodged by Ken Manuell, Director of Public Works,-He asked for more’ salary and for an assistant to help him do his many jobs. Manuell pointed out that he was in charge of streets, sewers, disposal plant, water, 2 parks, swimming pool, and all subdivision inspection. The Council rejected Manuells request for a raise as they had granted him what he had asked for in his budget but took the suggestion of hiring him an assistant under study. 11, 1962 Funds Allocated To Nevada County SACRAMENTO---An alocation of $15, 217 was made to Nevada County asits share of the May apportionment of highway users taxes, State Controller Alan Cranston reported recently.
