Truly a thrilling sight--these nodding
white bells growing on low creeping alpine
shrubs inrock crevices andalong the banks
of mountain lakes at elevations of around
' six or seventhousand feet. The sepals and
corolla stems are arich maroonred, adding
a touch of color to the delicate white of
the bells.
This was a favorite flower of naturalist
» John Muir, whose writings contain many
references to it--his "lowly, hardy, adventurous Cassiope"
Pound abundantly around the lakes in the
Grouse Ridge area.
