We first find ]J.A. Bennetts, Sr., at
Bradys Bend, Pennsylvania, in1872Let's
turn the pages of the family history: Joseph
Anson Bennetts, having completed his apprenticeship as a shoemaker in the Old
Counrty (ffngland), and having secured
recognition asaskilled workman, decided that America offered much better opportunity for success in his work. He
established himself at Bradys Bend ina
small shop. He acquired a record for skill
in the selection of his stock, and excellent workmanship, that brought orders
that kept him busy every day, and he was
doing well. A failure in iron production
caused him to move to the new oil town
Petrolia, Pennsylvania. Again business
prospered. Before leaving Fngland he had
become engaged to Flizabeth Ford. He
sent for herandthey were married. The oil
business declined. Flizabeth's father had
for several years been a gold miner in
Grass Valley, California. So to GV they
came in 1878+83 years ago to establish
a shoe business that has been family
operated ever since.
The attraction in front of Bennetts Bootery is the real live advertising midget
"Buster Brown", gelling one of the first
factory manufactured children's line of
shoes inthe US. Mill Street hasn't changed
much only the style of dress---and shoes.
Howard, the son and present owner, admits that at the
very beginning he was not too enthusiastic about following in his father’s foot steps and shoes. Today he enthusiastically enjoys the shoe business and constantly
studies newtechniques. He will tell you that 70 % of all
foot ailments are from improperly fitted shoes, Howard
became an expert in proper shoe fitting through a course
with the famous Dr. Scholl. Howard names name after
