~ OFFICIAL — a eve Hair-raising action will be "name of the game” at the Nev. Co. Horsemen Rodeo, scheduled July 2 in Grass Valley, when the turn comes for bareback riding. Cowboys are required to spur while hanging on to pitching outlaws with a single handhold. If they win, they pick up some hefty cash purses, as well as points toward western cowboy titles. The day didnt need to be the 4th of July for excitemenit to occur in the Sierras in the 1800's, In 1850 in Rough and Ready a miner about to be lynched appealed to William Morris Stewart to save him, “Dare you stop it?" a miner asked Stewart, “With you I dare," he replied and with that he drew his revolvers, "Stop, You have got the wrong man!" he ordered the mob, They stopped and William Morris Stewart went on to have a great influence in the Mother Lode as a senator and the “Father of American Mining Law", . -_ One depressing aspect of conformity in the Mother: Lode after the great boom was the tendency to change the colorful names of the original mining camps to more “acceptable” and respectable phrases, The camps had earned their names, If a dead horse had been found on the original campground, the place was likely to be called Dead Horse Springs or gulch or ravine. The names had a direct honesty that defied improvement; Hangtown, above was renamed Placerville?, Bedbug became Ione, Negro Bar Folsom, Respectability, if it is anything, is dull, 4 PROG w 2, Homecoming Breakfast = SS 7 W* Softball Game ART EXHIBIT 152 So, Auburn, G, V 10:00 A.M.
