Serious fire
is averted
A potentially disastrous fire in
the Graniteville area was kept
under control Friday afternoon
by air tankersdroppingretardantuntil ground crews arrived.
The cause of the blaze less
than a mile from Graniteville
and close to the scene of the
big 1959 ‘‘Marsh Mill Burn”
is under investigation.
The fire had a bad potential
if high winds had -been present,
Chuck Welch, fire control officer of the Nevada City District
Tahoe National Forest said.
Welch credited retardant drops
with confining the blaze to half
an acre before ground help arrived,
Six citizens from Graniteville
and four members of the Highlanders, a 4-Wheel Drive Sacramento Club, aided TNF in fighting the fire.

Many businesses housed here
-Crenshaws in
Grass Valley
There are three unrelated
but remarkably compatible
businesses under the roof at
401 E. Main Street in Crass
Valley..owned and operated
by three progressive and knowledgeable men in their respective areas of interest.
Crenshaw's houses the bondded Master Locksmith firm
headed by Phil Crenshaw..
whose father, Ray Crenshaw,
established the concern 40
years ago, in 1932; the gun
shop, originally part of the
Crenshaw interests, was purchased one year ago by Gene
Wiley; and George Warren conducts a repair business dealing in large appliances, air
conditioning, bicycles, lawn
mowers, washing machines,
pumps and the like.
The profession of locksmith
is an extremely complex affair and growing more sowith
time. At Crenshaw's all manner of locks and keys are made,
sie EARS aE eect oe
sold, repaired, installed in
homes, hotels, motels, business establishments, apartments and both domestic and
foreign vehicles of all types.
Hundreds of key "blanks" are
kept in stock, assuring the
customer of rapid and efficient
service; and a 24-hour emergency service is also maintained by the firm. Safe work
is a specialty also.
Phil's wife, Florence, is the
competent bookkeeper..and
when she is not engaged in
that phase of the business she
is involved in instructing in
round dancing. Her principle
affiliation in this fascinating
recreation is the '"Tommy“knockers Dancing Club,"
Phil is an ardent sportsman.
fishing and hunting are his
primary interests; and he says
that he "was propelled into
golfing’ by George Warren.
Warren's shop serves customers over a wide area as
he handles a variety of appliance work, bicycle repairs.
on both domestic and foreign
models,.and other equipment
as mentioned earlier in this
article. He uses the latest
approved methods in all of
his work and processes his
orders efficiently and with dispatch.
George, whose great love is
golf, also enjoys fishing and
hunting whenever his busy work
schedule permits. His. wife,
Evelyn, is devoted to her work
in the Christian Church.
Gene Wiley, whose hobby
was guns..and who turned that
hobby into an absorbing and
profitable business..stocks an
impressive inventory of rifles
and handguns,.and a line of
handcuffs and other related
items for use by law enforcement personnel,
Wiley also trades guns and
equipment related to their use,
and buys certain models from
private individuals. He says
that .22's are his fastest selling models; .and that 30-30's
and 30,06's are perhaps the
most popular rifles for use in
hunting in this region. He
also does some repair work.
Mrs, Wiley,.,Hortensia..is
known in the area for her association with the Welcome
Wagon and she is a concerned
worker with area Girl Scouts.
The three families reside in
Grass Valley, where they all
own their own homes and property.
Crenshaw's is_ presently
closed for a vacation period
which will end on July 4th..
after the annual celebration.
The store will be open for business as usual on July 5.
Business hours are from 8
a.m. until 5 p.m. daily, Tuesday thru Saturday. The phone
number is 273-7624..a 24hour number.
So..for those who want a
special key made, a faulty lock
opened and repaired, or need
a new safe or to have one
repaired; for those who must
obtain expert appliance or bike
repairs..or desire to purchase
a rifle or handgun..Crenshaw's should be your destination, It is truly a "'supermarket" for a variety of goods
and services...so handy and
convenient in every way,
