More, larger tax relief for older people SACRAMENTO — Property tax relief payments for more than 240,000 qualified older homeowners in California will "at long last" be on "more than just a token basis" during 197273, State Controller Hugh Flournoy said Saturday. "Broadened provisions of the Senior Citizens Property Tax Relief Act probably will increase the number of recipients from 56,000 to 240,000, and the total payments from $8 million to $56 million," Flournoy said. "This means that four times as many claimants will benefit and that the per-claimant share will increase from about $148 to over $233. This gets to the real heart of property tax relief for those who are on fixed incomes. "At long last, property tax relief for low income older home-owners is on more than just a token basis. It has now reached a level which will make it possible for many of these people to remain in their homes." Since the 1967 Legislature first authorized the Senior Citizens Property ‘lax Assistance program, there has been over $32.5 million paid to elegible homeowners," the Controller said. "It is significant that the new program will be 75 percent greater than that total in its first year." Voters should inform about address change : Registered voters who have moved or whose addresses have been altered in any way since they registered are urged to make the proper corrections at the office of the county clerk in the court house. The majority of voters who failed to receive sample ballots in the primary election did not get them because their mailing addresses are incorrect in the file, Melba Polglase deputy county clerk said. [If these people, or others with changed addresses, are to receive sample ballots for the coming November election addresses must be corrected, she stressed. The planning department is in the midst of renaming and renumbering some streets. Property owners have received official notice of changes. But renters probably have not received such notice. Mrs, Polglase urges voters in areas where changes have been made to notify the clerk's office if they have not done so. Sit back and let classified ads do the selling, renting or buying for you.
