The Nevada County Nugget ‘Hobos’ hike nature trails THESE HOBOES are taking part in the day camp at Grass Valley parks under the direction of Bob Jones, director of parks and recreation in Grass Valley. The hoboes walked from Memorial Park on Tuesday to Condon Park and walked along the nature trails as part of the day camp activities. “Notes off the Cuff”’ By P. L. Smith By golly..those "Damn Yandees" sorta wowed the people during their initial performances earlier this month..betcha there'll be SRO signs up all over the Old Nevada Theatre this coming weekend! The old theatre has seen a number of greats walk its historic boards. .happily the lights are shining brightly once more. A healthy sign indeed. Not many were aware of it.. but stout trouper Pearl Glass had taken a nasty tumble during a rehearsal just prior to the "dress" performance; but she managed to maintain the oldtradition.."the show must goon".. with nary a missed step; with the aid of a pain-killing medication under doctor's orders, Pretty stiff odds, wouldn't you say? Bravo, Pearl. * * * Have~ you ever attended an Obon Festival? No?,.well then, it's high time you did; and there'll be a fine one staged at the Buddhist Church at 125 B Street over in Marysville on July 7-8well worth the short trip. On Friday night a special Obon service will be held inthe Church ..t0 rejoice inthe enlightenment offered by the Buddha. This service is marked by the colorful mysticism of the faraway Orient, in ancient rituals observed for many centuries, On Saturday, the fantastically beautiful Obon Dance Festival will take place at the Church from 7-9:30 p.m. A chicken teriyaki dinner and other Japanese goodies will be served from 4-8 p.m. The public is cordially invited to attend by the Japanese community, and dinner reservations may be made by phoning 743-6426, * OK OK Many years ago, down in Central California by the Sea, I was associated with a little theatre group dedicated primarily to doing the "Gay 90's’ thing in mellerdrammers, olios and suchlike. The productions nearly all involved the menacing villain, the pure and woefully innocent heroine, the stalwart hero, the doting parents, the shady lady and .the old family retainer..loyal and trustworthy to the bitter end. The stories, all classic Americana, ran the gamut from hilarious comedy to outrageous tragedy..and were played in a repertoire of some half-dozen shows featuring the same actors and actresses during an entire season. One such production seemed ill-fated from the first to last curtain, That opening night I shall never forget. To begin with, a sudden and violent summer storm created havoc with traffic just about an hour before showtime..trees were downed, power lines were broken, and many potential patrons decided to stay at home, With resumption of power, fhe show opened nearly an nor ate than advertised..to an aldience of about 100 persons..most of whom appeared to be wishinig they'd stayed at home. Then, during a tense scene..when the villain had the heroine tied to the gigantic saw which was to draw her into its blade and a direful doom..the power went off again! There was a dreadful hush in the house, and just before the lights came back on, one line not in the scriptwas said with deafening clarity by our sweet little ingenue.. "Take your hands off of me you 1&$L#(*L@HSAHH" When the play resumed,.in mid-act,.much of the ensuing dialog was lost on most of the audience, as each viewer tried to figure out who had tried the hanky-panky so loudly resisted by that sweet little girl! _ During the finale..with entire cast on stage singing their lungs out..someone accidentally leaned on the rear flats and they fell down onto the startled players! No one was injured, the Set wasn't damaged..but the show certainly came to an abrupt conclusion. Washington News By JUDI STEWART The first local forest fire of the season started about 4 ‘p.m. Friday afternoon. This fire was man caused, as so many of our forest fires are. It burned less than one acre one mile south west of Graniteville, near a tributary to Poorman Creek. Sacramento Jeepsters who were in the area, were first to locate the fire and were actively trying to supress the fire when U, S, Forest Service crews, stationed at White Cloud, were called out by the lookout at Grouse Ridge. Big Bend crews also responded. Luckily it was a cool damp day, so the fire did not spread quickly andthe fire fighters were able to contain it rather quickly; with the help of fire retardent bombers from Nevada County Airpark. Three loads of retardent were requested by the forest service, The first dropped his load on target, but the second plane developed engine trouble soon after takeoff and was forced to drop his load over Banner Mountain, The third load could not be dropped on the fire because of the many men fighting the fire on this small area of land. Something I have learned recently, from Forest Service employees, is that the fire retardent used is a mixture of liquid and solid and sometimes does not mix well. Some of these large chunks have been knownto kill a man on the ground, That is why the third load was not dropped.
The fire was completely under control by 1 a.m. the following morning and the crews returned to their stations where they had to restock their fire trucks with newly sharpened tools and fresh water for drink. ing as well as for fire fighting. * * * Over this past weekend our area was overrun with Jeeps. Members of the Sacramento Jeepsters, with about 150 Jeeps were camped at Golden Quartz campground, On Saturday morning they took off on a trail ride over Gaston Ridge, returning to camp Saturday night for abarbe-que, with live music, Golden Quartz campground is not equiped with electricity, so the Jeepsters brought along their own generator for lights and sound equipment. It seemed very strange to us living about one half mile from the campground, to hear music coming from that direction. * ok x _ I was very pleased to get a phone call from the son of one of our summer neighbors the other day. Rick Zuber called from Sacramento where he was attending Boys' State. Rick is the son of Mr. and Mrs, Robert Zuber, who make their winter home in Encino, Calif. and spend their summers at their place here on the river. I was happy to hear that Rick had made Boys’ State. I understand it is quite an honor to be chosen from your high school to attend the conference which is held in our capitol city each year. The boys study state government and set up a government of their own while there. Attending from Nevada Union High was Mike Wagner. * * OK Washington county water district has had its problems this past week in supplying water to its subscribers. Last week I reported on the rocks placed in the ditch near Canyon Creek, that blocked the water on Sunday. There was more vandalism at the dam on Saturday of this week. Someone took a board away from the opening of the ditch so too much water ran into the ditch and overflowed its banks, reve BUSINESS Wednesday, June 28, 1972 9 Three timber sales listed by BLM office An estimated 1,754,000 board feet of timber situated on three separate sites is scheduled for sale by the Folsom District Office of the Bureau of Land Management.
