Editorial The Century Of Valor Nevada City's Independence Day celebration this year honors the Nevada City volunteer fire department, an institution that is 100 years old. The department, however, is norelicof the past. It stands today as one of the most alert, responsible, and influential groups in the community. On this 4th on July we are therefore celebrating and honoring the living as well as the dead. And what could be more appropriate for a Nevada City 4th? Down through the years Grass Valley and Nevada City and many towns along the Mother Lode have never lost the meaning of Independence Day. Independence Day is above all a day that honors life and the living---and the fact that certain unalienable rights are still honored by our American system, and that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is in this context, that we honor the Nevada City volunteer fire department for acentury of valor, foritisa living breathing institution, and a unique product of American independence. The Freeway Dalia \ J (Reprinted from the Sacramiento Bee editiorial page of June 18.) ; The Nevada City Council has voted unanimously for a restudy-by the California Highway Commission of a proposed freeway which would pass. through the center of Nevada City. The commission may or may not have exhausted all feasible alternatives for its suggested Route 22-49 freeway. But how familiar has become the cry of communities that freeways have wounded andcrippled their community values. Increasingly it becomes clear that freeways Cannot be approached alone from the barren engineering point of view. In the case of Nevada City the protest comes primarily from groups concerned with the preservation of historical and cultural values, values, which in fact give Nevada City its chief charm.
Present highway commissionyrocedures give lip service to the consideration of community values. Under this wording community values may be considered then violated. The need is for a requirement, not that community values merely be considered, but that they shall never be sacrificed without compelling reason. If the predominance of engineering considerations are tocontinue unchecked,we may look forward to vast and gleaming freeways that can carry people swiftly to places no longer worth going to. To The Editor Letter Dear Editor: Due to various technical difficulties we have experienced these past few months at some airports along our 491/492 Route we are being forced to temporarily cease scheduled ‘operation of our ’49er Route. Economically speaking, it is not feasible at this time to continue the operation, and until. certain political situations and airport ground facilities are improved we see little need in attempting further exploitation of your area at great expense to TransSicrera Aicways, Inc. The increasing pressure from localitics elsewhere in this state requesting our type of service forces us to open new routes where greater assistance through more satisfactory airport facilities and population density exists. We anticipate reentering scheduled service to your area at a time in the future when greater concentrated effort is put forth on your part to prove the necessity for scheduled service and the wholehearted cooperation and support from the community governing bodies is given. Sincerely, TRANS-SIERRA, ARWAYS, Inc. Theo*ore W.
