iP ep Ses The Nevada City Transcript kept up on the news and was especialiy informative about crime in the Washington area, eee July 9, 1892--District Attorney Nilon received a letter by stage today, stating that his services were needed up at Washington, as a man named William Sear] had been stabbed to death at Rocky Bar by William Hyndman, who was locked up in Washinton jail. The cause of the murder is said to be about a woman of bad repute known as "Cornish Lou,” This is said to be the same woman who caused trouble between Chappel and Steele at Washington, the latter killing the former in September 1889, ok ho July 11, 1892--Hyndman met the woman, "CornishLou”, at Kohler's store and became involved in a dispute with her, which finally led to blows, William Searl, the woman's paramour, separated the combatants, whereupon the fight ensued between the two men, in which Hyndman was thrown to the floor, Searl punching him with his fists while down and the woman beezting him over the head with a hammer, Hyndman drew a small pocket knife and stabbed Sear] in the heart. Searl died immediately. He was buried in the Washington cemetery tie next morning. The woman is a quarrelsome person and has been the instigator of two or three murders, September 3, 1892--William Hyndman, who killed William Searl at Washington, wes found guilty by a jury of murder in the first degree. (He was sentenced later to 17 years in State prison). ¥eeK July 21, 1893--The Suprer:: Court has granted a new trial in the case of William Hyndman, who was convicted in the superior court of this county for murder in the first degree for the killing of William Sear] at Washington. The judgement of conviction was reversed by the higher court because of an error on the part ofthe trial judge in instructing the jury. eK October 7, 1895--At Washington Saturday evening, George Rogers got into a quarrel with a man by the name of Spangler. During the row, Rogers placed his hand on Spangler's shoulder, as if to make up, and at the same time drew a pistol and began shooting at Spangler. He fired two shots, neither of which. took effect and Spangler managed to get away. Constable Gleason attempted to arrest Rogers, whereupon the latter struck the officer with the butt of his pistol, knocking out two of Gleason's teeth. Rogers then went to his mother's house and left for the woods yesterday morning at 10 o'clock, taking a rifle with him. Intelligence of the affair was sent to Nevada City and Sheriff Douglas left for Washington about 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, with the intention of
