Gene Rial, the newly elected president of the city chamber, appealed to the council Monday to restore the $750 cut from the preliminary budget. "Actually we need a total budget of $7,500," he said, The council cut the requested $1,500 at a recent meeting. * Rial said about 65 per cent of the city’s merchants support the chamber by paying dues which: ‘amount to $1775 a year, With the $1500. we still need donations to bring our working budget to $4,000, Rial said, The best efforts of chamber members could bring the dues up to $3,000, he said, and assured the council that all effort will be made to bring in that amount of money. Rial and Tom Coleman, also
a newly elected officer, asked the council not to cut the budget now, “We are a new group and trying to make the chamber self supporting." they said, Marie Novak, a chamber member for many years, urged the council to "give them a chance," Paine told the chamber officers why the cut had been made, He said the city isspending much money on upgrading the downtown area, which he said benefits the merchants and the chamber. He said "the city gives the chamber office space freeof charge and donates services of the city crew and police for chamber affairs, such as the Father's Day bicycle race, Trade Fair, Fourth ofJuly celebration and Christmas, "When the city renovates the SOuth Yuba Canal Building and Ott's Assay Office, they will be used for a tourist information center with the chamber again to’have free housing in "an historic building where tourists will flock." Each year we have been told that the chamber will become self supporting. There is no communication between one group and the incoming officers, Mer. John Rankin said, He urged the present officers to meet with the new officers next year and explain the council's feelings, Rial promised the council to provide alist of paid up members and a proposed budget for the chamber at the July 12 meeting, "Each month after I'll bring ina list of new members who have -joined the chamber and paid their dues," he added, The vote to restore the cut funds and give the chamber $1,500 was unanimous, In one other matter discussed the council encouraged Martin W.
