For weeks, letters, pee oi and

“Proponents of Assembly Bill
419 presented it improperly as a
labor reform proposal designed
to clarify existing law to the
benefit of employer and employee

many dangers which they vocifer. ’
ously pointed out to the labor
committee. Farmers as employers
were vitally concerned with many
of the provisions in. this labor
organization represeritation bill.
Primarily, they were concerned
with the complete disregard for
the right of the small employer
and the. farmer-employer who
would completely lose his bargaining power in the raising of
a perishable crop.
The bill as presented provided
a new definition of “workers” to
include any persron who performs
work for compensation on a commission, piece-work, or contract
basis. It provided for a division
of the Department of Industrial
Relations to have complete authority for all purposes of the
act. The division would make its

the state, the true story of the
ramifications ofa law change as
proposed in AB 419 was presented to the legislators:
Five members of the Senate

For control this time of year,
foliage spray to individual plants
is most effective. For use around
gardens and other valuable ornaméntal plants it is recommended
that ammate be used.
Ammate is more expensive than
brush killers. It is safer to use
near ornamentals and crops that
would be damaged by 4, 5-T.
In using ammate use % of a
pound per gallon of water and
add % teaspoon .of stiekerspreader. ‘,
Ammate is very corrosive to
metal, and spray ‘equipment
should be thoroughly cleaned immediately after using. A. small
amount of oil forcéd through the
sprayer immediately before using
ammate will help reduce corrosion.
For use where drift on valuable
plants. is not such a problem,
either ester of 2;4,5-T, or a mixture of 2,4,5T-2,4-D may be used.
These materials should be used
when the first leaves—are full
grown and before they. turn yellow or red, Spray the plants completely, . including ‘the — stems,
down to the ground. If you do
not start your spray program
until later in the season after
the leaves have turned, a mixture
of amino triasol and 2-4-5-T is
effective. Follow the directions
on the container for best results.
After spraying poison oak with
any. of the chemicals, do not
dig it up or burn it. The weed
killers may, take as long as six
or eight months to completely
kill the plants. Dead bushes will
usually decay in time, and no
clean-up is necessary. Care should
be taken in burning poison oak.

Widows of wartime or peacetime veterans were advised recently by “Veterans Service Officer H. E. Nolen that they can
never have their pension or compensation benefits restored by’
the Veterans Administration once
they have remarried.
The only exception would be
in the case of a remarriage which
has been properly annulled.
Before this year, widows of
veterans of the Civil, Indian, and
Spanish American Wars, the
Boxer Rebellion and the Philippine Insurrection could have their
pensions restored if their nonveteran husbands died.
But since last January Ist the
effective date of Public Law 85more harmful Gan touthing the

857 passed by Cosigteet in September 1958, restoration of penSion after the death of a nonveteran husband is no longer possible.
The total effect of the regulation is that no widow of any veteran, of any war or of peacetime
service only, can recover pension
or compensation benefits as a
veteran’s widow once she has remarried.
