Growing Fast
A detailed review of fast-growing outdoor recreation on the nabeen anSecretary of Agricultional forecasts has
ounced by
ture Ezra Taft Benson.
The USDA’s Forest Service has
been planning the review for
severa] months, and is now readying field task forces which will
begin on-the-ground studies on
July 1. In the California region

The American people, said the

previous estimates. In 1924 about

made to national forests; by 1957

of 10 regional offices, with the
ranger district as the basic unit
to ‘be examined. Final data will
be compiled for regions and states.
William Fischer, ex-supervisor of
the Cleveland and Six Rivers Natoinal Forests, is project leader
in California for both the state
and nationalwide inventory.
The first phase involves mapping existing information with
the aid of aerial photographs,
finding out what lands are suitable for various recreational uses,
and pinpointing areas needing
more study.
Field crews in California national forests have already inventoried these areas. They have
determined the acreage available,
how accessible it is to the public,
whether it is available, what natural attractions—water, unusual
scenery, mountains—are nearby,
and over-all quality of the area
from the standpoint of public
recreation. ,
All kids of outdoor recreation
are being considered, including
camping, hunting, and fishing,
picnicking, mountain climbing,
boating and swimming,
Field work is scheduled to be
completed in the fall of 1960. Data
from the field, along with other
information, will be compared
with estimated future recreation
use. The final report will be issued in the spring of 1961. From
theses studies will ocme firm

was pumped into the truck tank

were released. Six different lots
received this treatment and their
survival ranged from 10 per cent

On the other hand, survival of
the two groups released at Gifferent places in fresh water has

which in most years would have

On n Creek in Modoc

abandoned railroad bridge that
had* accumulated debris were
blasted out. The barriers were
blocking the spawhing run of
rainbow trout from Goose Lake.
Plans were made to remove
during the summer some log

County,
Installation of an electrically

completed on Putah Creek in
Lake County. The screen will

These projects, part of a continuing program to restore and

by the department in conjunction with. the federal DingellJohnson program which apportions to the states funds derived
from a tax on sales of fishing

The Maririe Resources Operations Branch reported that fishing for rockfish was sporadic

was good only off San Francisco.
Surf fishing was reported generally good all along the northern
coast. A few striped bass were
taken along outer beaches in the
San. Francisco area. .The’ ocean
run. of stripers started much earlier this year than last.
