Growing Fast A detailed review of fast-growing outdoor recreation on the nabeen anSecretary of Agricultional forecasts has ounced by ture Ezra Taft Benson. The USDA’s Forest Service has been planning the review for severa] months, and is now readying field task forces which will begin on-the-ground studies on July 1. In the California region a Forest Service field inventory actually got under way almost a in cooperation with the ‘California Public Outdoor RecreThe two are being -closely coordiavoid duplication, acForester A. The American people, said the secretary, are turning to national in everincreasing numbers, exceeding all previous estimates. In 1924 about 4 million recreation visits were made to national forests; by 1957 had jumped to 61 million annual visits; in 1958 it million, an upsurge of 12 per cent over the preWious accounted for one-sixth of the Nation’s total. this forests for recreation that figure went to 684 year .California All indications are that trend will continue. The Forest Service review will include inventory and evaluation of recreational resources and possibilities in the 181 million acres of national forests. Project leaders. will work out of 10 regional offices, with the ranger district as the basic unit to ‘be examined. Final data will be compiled for regions and states. William Fischer, ex-supervisor of the Cleveland and Six Rivers Natoinal Forests, is project leader in California for both the state and nationalwide inventory. The first phase involves mapping existing information with the aid of aerial photographs, finding out what lands are suitable for various recreational uses, and pinpointing areas needing more study. Field crews in California national forests have already inventoried these areas. They have determined the acreage available, how accessible it is to the public, whether it is available, what natural attractions—water, unusual scenery, mountains—are nearby, and over-all quality of the area from the standpoint of public recreation. , All kids of outdoor recreation are being considered, including camping, hunting, and fishing, picnicking, mountain climbing, boating and swimming, Field work is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 1960. Data from the field, along with other information, will be compared with estimated future recreation use. The final report will be issued in the spring of 1961. Once there, salt water was pumped into the truck tank until the fish were in water of the same salinity and temperainto which they were released. Six different lots received this treatment and their survival ranged from 10 per cent to 40 per cent. On the other hand, survival of the two groups released at Gifferent places in fresh water has averaged about 90 per cent. transportation, is essential of.the project, Warne said his scientists will continue experiments to try to solve the problem this year: Personnel stationed at the U. In addition, the federal agency truckéd one-fourth of the market fish to Hamilton City (near Chico) for release.
