Beckwourth was found, ill and close to death, by members of a wagon train starting across the Sierras. Nursed back to health, he told the group of a new, low-level route he had discovered earlier—a road that would carry them around the difficult and treacherous Donner Pass. Marysville merchants and townsfolk staged a tremendous celebration when Beckwourth led the first wagon train overhis road and through Henness Pass. Unfortunately, at the height of festivities, fire broke out and reduced the town to ashes. The bankrupt business men were unable to give Beckwourth the unlimited funds they had pledged for support of the new route. But Beckwourth’s discovery opened the passes to a tide of immigration to Midvalley Country. Today, more and more people are discovering the delight of living in this fabulous region.
