. NEWS CENTRAL.. .Nevada County's NBC News election coverage, at
the Nugget office, looked as hectic at times as do the larger city election centrals . Shown with phone calls from the precincts are (left to right)
Dean Thompson, Stu Flansburg, Hollis Bentley, and the Victor adding
machine donated tothe cause by Hobbyhouse, Mrs. Lois Shock. Some 45:precinct workers on the NBC staff had six phones buzzing at several
points inearly evening. And that posed a few problems to the four "central" sparkplugs.
Lunardi Gets Largest Voter
Approval,

ization until the final week, and
little time for that organization
to do effective work, Itwasa victory of individual Republican
voters over virtually all of the
official county party leaders, who
backed Goldwater.
-Virtually the entireslate of
electedcentral committee mem~
bers appear to be pro-Goldwater.
Cranston had been expected to
carry Nevada County. The upset,
if it could be called that, was
Salinger's state-wide victory.
The race had been termed a close
one in advance throughout the
state. In Nevada County Cranston
got the edge 1900-1480.
The Nevada County vote
against the Sierra College tax
hike was 5041-3553. Placer
County voters, however, gavethe
issue a favorable margin of nearly
2000 votes.
The Republican write -in for
Paul J. Lunardi fell short of reelecting him in the primary, but
it did add to the largest local
vote fora Democratic candidate.
Lunardi, in sweeping to top
spotin Nevada County asa
Democratic candidate, got 4074
party votes, In addition, he received528 Republican write-ins.
Mrs. Margarette Brown Meggs,
Lunardi's November opponent,
polled 56 Democratic write-ins
in addition to her 2516 Republican votes,
Congressman Harold T. Johnson
polled 3933 Democratic votes in
gaining nomination for re-election.
Tax Boost Carried —
-Assem bly candidate Howard
Smith received 3377 votes in his
uncontested race for the Democratic nomination.
Smith will likely be opposed
by Eugene Chappie, who apparently won a narrow victory over
Brooks Fiske. Nevada County Republicans gave Chappie 1485
votes to 1440 for Fiske. A third
candidate, Harold Welch, ran
third with 810 votes. Other
counties in the district reported
Highway
Priority

Chamber of Commerce meeting
to consider highway project rec~
ommendations in Nevada and
Sierra Counties will take place
tomorrow at noon in Downieville
at The Forks.
Attending the meeting will be
representatives of the Grass Valley and Nevada City Chambers of
Commerce, as wellas county officials. The Division of Highways
will also have representatives at
the meeting.
Recommendations that are developed atthe Downieville meeting will be grouped with recommendations from similar meetings
in other counties and presented to
the California Highway Commis~
sion for consideration in its 196566 budget.
similar close balloting between
Chappie and Fiske.
Congressman Johnson w ill be
opposed by former John Birch
Society member ChesterC. Merriam. Merriam's three half-hour —
television shows and heavy news-~
paper advertising apparently paid
off. His margin through the district was similar to his victory in
Nevada County where he polled
1815 votesto1011 for Don Blake,
533 for WiltonJ. Owens, and 489
for Kirpal Singh.
In other state -wide voting,
Nevada County Republican voters
followed the trend by giving
George Murphy 1776 votes to 1530
for Leland Kaiser and 561 for Fred
Hall in the race for nomination
tothe U.S, Senate. Murphy will
oppose Salinger in November.
Democrats gave the delegation
of Governor Edmund G, Brown
2729 votes in Nevada County
against 1349 favoring the dele~
gation of Los Angeles Mayor
Samuel Yorty. State-wide results
were similar.
