re fs S om ad TP VA Oe PT Ree 2 The Nevada County Nugget Wednesday, June 4, 1969 hy er of t » 43 et ee, j Ad (83 wa ” By Fay M. Dunbar 273-2934 Yesteryear, in Rougf and Ready had its gentler moments as weil as its’ "Rodgh" ones, Perhaps, due to the. fact that the entife, areas only church was built here in 1850. There were more pioneerwomen here, percentage ‘wise, than in other mining camps. From references I have read it appears that the first woman to arrive in the area was Mrs, Riddle who arrived here with her "good husband" in the fall of 1849, ney House, later known as the Rough and Ready Hotel. She was honored guest (or hostess) at a noteworthy party held there in 1854, In-view of the recult to be certain from the unfamiliar 1850 type wording and the circumstances whether the party was for her or given by her for someone else. Except from the Grass Valley Telegraph (todays Union) of April 6, 1854. "The farewell Cotillion Party given by Mrs. Downey at the Downey House in Rough and Ready was well attended and especially so by the ladies, as the strange anomaly for the mountains, of a majority in favor of the ladies in attendance actually occurred on the occasion above mentioned, We beNeve that in proportion to size for a mountain village, Rough and Ready is ahead of all others in California, in the number of respectable ladies that can be collected together. Mrs. Downey anid not but be gratified with NEVADA COUNTY PUBLISHED EVERY WEDNESDAY BY NEVADA COUNTY PUBLISHING CO, 318 Broad Street, Nevada City, Ca. 95959 Telephone 265-2471 Second class postage paid at Nevada City, California. Some guests were undoubtedly Mrs. Dunleavy, wife of the Church's first minister, Miss Sarah E. Millner married here in 1852, Miss Monk, married here in 1860, Miss I March who became Mrs, J. H. Niles here in 1861, Mrs. Frank Torpie who arrive here from New York via South America in 1854, Miss Julia Single who later became Mrs, John Fippin, Sr. and Mrs. Mary Alameida Silviera here at least by 1852, The once lovely old Dikeman home which stood until last year (lately known as the Frank Fippin place on the hill overlooking the Ravine was built by Simon Henry Dikeman in 1864, Here he brought his young wife, Anamarie Krause Dikeman who came to this area as his bride in 1852, Dikeman was Superintendent of the Excelsior Water Co. whose main ditch and flumes he had helped to build and engineer. Here the Dikeman children, Marilad, Waldo, Henry, and George attended the old Rough and Ready School their father had built. The Dikeman home provided a cultural atmosphere for the little community. Young Dikeman had a piano brought from Sacramento for his family. Sunday afternoons their home was a gathering place for Croquet, lemonade and music. All was not gentle however, like the story of the woman (no name recorded) who was famous for her cooking, particularly pies, When her husband passed away, one of the mourners hurried to her home and said "This is sudden and may be in poor taste but will you marry me?" She answered "Things are of a sudden age and fast pace, I'm sorry but I have already accepted the Undertaker," Another not so gentle activity was the seven saloons the community had and the activities provided by Jennie Moore and her friends of the Gambling Tables, * * * Many times references are inconclusive and of questionable authenticity, When I wrote about Lotta Crabtree dancing on the anvil at the old Fippin blacksmith shop I avoided the question of the color of her eyes, sometimes reported as blue, sometimes brown. Last week, thanks to the facilites offered by our new Library System Iread a book about Lotta, titled, The Triumphs and Trials of Lotta Crabtree, written by~David Dempsey with Raymond P, Baldwin, These. gentlemen (attorneys) knew Lotta and her flashing “brown eyes, Incidentally, the book was fascinating. It covered Lotta's career including her early years in our own Sierra Nevadas and the court battles over her fabulous fortune after her death in 1924, , ** * Mr. Orin Brown is the newest man at Rough and Readys' newest service station, Mr. Brown, former owner of the Midtown Station in Grass Valley has big plans for our new station with the ersatz age. He has already added and old fashioned iron stove in preparation for the~ winter months ahead. His wife Helen sent down some lovely George Mathis colored etchings, of other areas of Nevada County, to brighten up the office, They plant beautification-for. theoutside, too. Mr, Brown saysthe ° Midtown was getting too big and cosmopolitan, He likes ‘our homey community atmosphere. * * * 3 Miss Diana Stevens has had her tonsils out. Avisit to the hospital is never fun but Diana is less of a worry to mother than young Terry who is there with a very serious and as yet unexplained eye infection. Terry Stevens senior had to get into the act too. He is alergic to Scotch Broom when its blooming and is home with a severe attack of Asthma, With all this we hope Mother doesn't get it too. Aside from being tired and worried, Joann semms to be doing fine. Tthe Stevens live in their very new home on the Van Uden place. ae Danny Moore, son of the Don Moores' of Rough and Ready Road and just about to become 13 years old, has been selected as Patrolman of the Year. Donny attends Mount St. Marys and his school together with Henhessy and Lyman Gilmore have a very fine Safety Program. In April Don was selected as Patrolman of the Month. On May 26 at a fine cremony he was awarded a plaque with hisname, the name of his school and the year he served as Patrolman of the Year. He also won a free pass to the Del: Oro Theater. Miss Vicki Johnson will become the bride of Mr. Ernest Frazer on June 28 at 10 a.m; at the Little Wedding Chapel in Rough and Ready. Vicki is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Van Johnson of Wildwood Acres,
Ernie is the son of Mr, and Mrs, James Frazer of Hesperia, California, They are both graduates of N.U.H.S. The Frazers are former residents of Rough and Ready and when his parents went South last fall Ernest stayed in Rough and Ready with his Grandfather Mr. Park Montgomery. The young couple plan to make their home near Victorville, California. * * * The Rough and Ready Square Dancers will hold their regularbusiness meeting on Sunday, June 8 at the Grange Hall. The “ program begins at 5:30 p.m. with pot luck dinner and after a brief business session there will be dancing to complete the evening. Bob Jackson, Club caller will call the squares, The Grange will hold its regular Public Party from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on June 8, Everyone is welcome. Donation is 50¢, Refreshments will be served, * % Mr. and Mrs, Ray Blankenship are making their home on Easy Street in Penn Valley until they build their new home. They are going to build onacreage selected in Rough. and Ready. Mr. Blankenship's true love is Real Estate but until they get settled, he is working at the -M and S Cheverolet Garage in Grass Valley. The Blankenships are cousins of the Van Johnsons and have been making their home in Los Angeles. * * * It looks as_if Ready Springs School better raise its enrollment sights for next year. There are three new families moving into Rough and Ready, in the Wildwood Acres area, with a total of 15 children, © Neglect fo send in claims. More than 700 péople are going to be mad when they read this, Their wives are going to be mad too. A total of 738 people who own homes and live in them in Nevada county forgot toreturn the forms which would have entitled them to a property tax refund this year and an additional exemption next year. The 738 who failed to fill out the forms thus lost $70 apiece this year and a $750 assessment deduction next year which would represent another $70 savings -if they had only filed. The rest of Nevada county's homeowner-occupants -some 4,422 of them -can expect a $70 check pretty soon, probably about June 15. Assessor Elton (Bub) Tobiassen said Monday that all forms which were returned from eligible people have been forwarded to the California controller's office for processing. State officials assured him that there will be no delay in sending checks to Nevada county residents, and the state should begin mailing them on or about June 15. All in all, 85 per cent of the eligible people filed locally. The original deadline was April 15, but the Legislature and governor granted an extension to May 23, and 54 Nevada county residents took advantage of that grace period. The money which is paying the $70 this year to homeowneroccupants who filed is a result of Prop. 1-a approved by voters last year. I was the Legislature's way of passirig back to the people revenues received from a half cent sales tax increase which was earmarked for property tax relief, === — Tobiassen, noting the 85 per cent return on these forms, re-ported that he had a 95 per cent return on forms sent firms concerning business inventories. And farmers sent back 98 per cent of the livestock declaration. forms Tobiassen had mailed them. _ "We appreciate this response from the public deeply," the assessor said, “because it gives us an accurate record," Applications for service academies should be made WASHINGTON, D.
