Forcible rape
Jury finds ;
Wolfe guilty
Reycionl Walter Wolfe, 27,
Nevada City was convicted of
forcible rape for the second timeby a Superior Court Jury
yesterday. This repeated crime
occurred while Wolfe was on
court probation for a similar
previous offense. .
His latest victim was an attractive Nevada Union senior.
The young lady was forced .to
submit under threat of death
with a pen knife (had broken tip)
held at her throat.
The attack took place at the
South Yuba Trails Campground
near Lake City at dusk on May 9.
Wolfe had picked up the girl
under duress at Boulder Street
and Park Avenue, He drove her
on. his new shiny motorcycle to
the assignation scene. Wolfe,
with a broken marriage, has a
four year old son. He is of slight
build, a sharp dresser, with a
certain amount of. charisma.
Arriving atSouth Yuba Trails,
Wolfe caught the girl as she
. attempted to flee. Later he was
to push her over an embankment, abandon her, and
drive off alone in the darkness.
: Disheveled, crying, and
ashamed (according to her
testimony) she walked the
lonely road to North Columbia in
the dark, was picked up in a
truck, remained mute with the
benevolent strangers. and
returned to her foster home. The
next day she was to be medically
examined and to tell her story to

Public Defender William
Hager in his dramatic fashion,
discounted District Attorney
Ron MacMillen’s case for The
People and said the press would
probably headline the struggle
as the Nevada County Motorcycle Rape Case or as_ the
Nevada County Pen Knife Case:
He made much of the: victim
being able to out wrestle the
slightly built Ray Wolfe.
MacMillen reminded the jury
that the celebrated Hollywood
rape-murderer, Charles .
Manson, was also of slight build.
Hager said he truly believed
that the sheriff’s and probation
departments had concocted the
tragic chain of events and had ©
brainwashed the story into the
mind of the victim as a means of
entrapment for the innocent
Wolfe.
Hager tried to establish the
known: mileage on the brand new
motorbike would not have
permitted the bike to bounce
over the road to and from the
campground.
At times 24 women and two
men were in the audience. Many
of the teen-age _ students
listening to the case were from
the John Woolman School.
The jury took three hours to
reach their guilty verdict. At
times sounds of muffled loud
laughter and blurred male and
female arguments seeped
through the poorly acoustically
engineered jury room.
Dan C. Stewart steered the

. Rough and Ready’s Fire District has made
lots of progress these last few months. When the
new fire truck was purchased they saved money
by buying a truck with less water capacity than
they really needed. There are many places in
the Rough and Ready area where water is
simply not available.Last week they were able
auxiliary water truck
for $1,000. They still don’t have the money but
the volunteer fireemen and the auxiliary each
pledged $500
Now they have the extra ws ayes capacity which
they so desperately need or proper fre

the big event. This Celebration helps put some of
our organizations on a comfortably black
financial footing. Besides lots of work it is also
lots of fun.
This Sunday is Homecoming at the Malakoff.
Gather up your family and a very full Picnic
basket and go for a day of fun and fresh air, only
minimum refreshments are for sale. Rough and
“Ready girls are going to dance for the occasion
and it is entirely fitting that they should. The
Excelsior Ditch which was developed for the
fairly extensive mining in Smartville came right
through our little valley. The Portuguese Mining_ Company experimented with it in several areas.
-The old NID syphon from the Sidtnasess
Ditch on the Northwest side of Squirrel Creek to
the Rex Reservoir on the opposite hill on the
Southwest side of the Creek has finally been
replaced. ._We will surely miss that beautiful
display of interesting Ice forms that have been
there these last few winters. At present the area
is just an ugly gash where all the trees and
foliage have been destroyed. I have my
sprinklers going down there now but I wonder if
it will grow any natural cover this late in the
year. If I could keep the sprinkler there all the
time we might make progress but that sprinkler
has to cover that arm of the pasture every 7 to 10
days or the pasture burns. Anyway winter rains
will restore its beauty if it doesn’t wash it all
away. NIDs new syphon is snug and tight so no
more winter ice forms. —

traditional Hawaiian. Muu. Muus and sang.
Hawaiian words for ‘‘Song of the Islands” were
done by soloist, Olyve Simmons A special duet

members of the group and of the audience that
had recently visited Hawaii. Hand language for

provided by our very talented Director Mrs.
Helen Beatie. Mrs. Charlotte Anderson asked
permission to really go Hawaiian—and did!
Seemed like I was back on vacation again.

: Friday evening I sat up-on our hillside for a
while and watched the rest of the world go by. I
find it getting more and more difficult to make
that hill in one climb. This makes an excellent
excuse to sit quietly and catch my breath. As
Shakespeare also said ‘All the worlds a stage
and the men and women in it merely players’.
Its fun to sit up there and see how right he really
was. Its a beautiful play with a beautiful setting.
Life close to me is so different that it adds to the
feeling of being an onlooker of the ;
. Around me its so quiet you can hear the
irrigating hcg Redacee . from the sprinklers.
My friend the little rabbit has. come out of the
brush to nibble. Seems to me I can almost hear
him chewing. A few bees are still buzzing.
Sometimes I think all of Marysville must take to
the mountains over the weekends. The distance
is almost‘a'steady roar.Probably most of the tra-velers are from some other area and just chose
Highway 20 because it is so beautiful. Friday
evening is such a pleasant change from their
daily routine. They really act like kids fresh out
of school. Our industrious neighbor across the
way is working in his lovely weed free garden.
Turns me green with envy. I can see my neighbor who is a cow freak like me out enjoying her
cows. Only difference between Hepsi and I is
that she knows something about what she is
doing and has husband Bill to help her. Our fun
loving neighbors are preparing for their
Saturday night revels. Even our quiet neighbors
on Rough and Ready Road are enjoying this
beautiful summer evening puttering about.
Glad its over! Elections that is. If we all voted
it will be good. If we all voted intelligently it
would be better. I for one find I can’t keep
emotions out of it. Sometimes I vote for a candidate because I know and like him. Other times
I vote against a candidate simply because I
personally don’t like something he has done. I
try to call this analizing but at best there is too
much of personal feelings involved. Hope you
did. better.
Back to Hawaii! I suggested last week that
you might be interested in your imu, opu, etc. An
imu is a ground oven or barbeque pit. The pit for
a luau is roasted here. We had our luau at the
Keahou Beach Hotel on the Kona Coast of the
Island of Hawaii. The women were greeted with
leis in. the traditional manner-a kiss on both
cheeks and an aloha. We had rum punch and
after-a couple ofgreeting songs and dances we
went on to stuff ourselves with al all the traditional
luau foods even shushi. Shushi is raw fish and
truthfully it isn’t bad. After we were thoroughly
satiated andrelaxed we really saw and heard a
beautiful program of music and
Hawaiian style. Your opu is your stomach. Yourokole is your bottom. They were always telling
ame to shove mine over. Even tho’, for Hawaiian
women, big bottoms are still acceptable. In the
old days brides were often selected, yes even
given preference, for their weight. In the islands
one must not say in the states. They are extremely proud of being one of the states. Its
better to say mainland but they really glow
when you saw: we Americans. They are very
proud of the fact that oe rent es
