“Have you been to North San
Juan in the last few years to see
their beautiful crop of Scotch
Broom? You ought to go. It
would be an eye opener.“It’s very late!” :
Phillips, however, explai
that only about 15,000 to 20,000
acres of the county are infested
with Scotch Broom.
The largest. concentration of
the weed, stated Phillips, is-in
the Nevada» City area along
Highway. 49 and in North San
Juan. He added that a small
amount of Scotch Broom is in
the Chicago Park area.
No control programs are
being carried on by public
agencies, according to Phillips, .
because of the great cost involved. “‘We couldn’t try to
eradicate something like this,” »
he said, ‘it would be impractical
to try.” He cited economic inPUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE

Scotch Broom “is spreading .
some each year,’”’ said Phillips,
“because it produces a
tremendous amount of seed: He
added that the. seeds can lay in
the ground for years and germinate at any time. ;
Phillips pointed out, however,
that Scotch Broom ‘seems to be
limited to certain elevations and
cited the 2.000 to 3,000 foot
range as the best for the plants.
He. said the weed must be.
sprayed while it is in the
blossom stage or the spray is not
effective. He added that the
length of time the seeds can
germinate makes it hard to
control.
Several years ago the county
tried a form of biological control
to‘stop the spreading/of Scotch
Broom. Phillips said two types
of insects were introduced to the
area. One was a small moth that
was expected to bore into the
twigs of Scotch Broom, thereby
stunting the plants’ growth, and
the other was‘a small seed pod
weavel that was expected to
eat the plants’ seeds.
Neither of the insects, said
Phillips, have taken hold in the
county and if they are still
present. their existence is not
noticed. _ =
Whether Scotch Broom is a
“pernicious villain” or only a
problem in limited areas will, no
doubt,.be determined in time.
