Fire Razes Pioneer
Home In French Corral
FRENCH CORRAL-~-Another
of Nevada County"s 100-+yearold homes was lost to fire
Saturday morning when the
seven room residence of Bill
and Lucille Browning burned.
Rapid response by the North
SanJuan Fire Department and
the Shady Creek Division of
Forestry station was not enough to halt the blaze which
was assumed to have started
from a stove,
The house was situated
one -half mile from here on
the Birchville Rd,
The browning family was
out of the house when the fire
was discovered by Lucille
Smith, next door neighbor,
who summoned help,
The Brownings joined
neighbors shortly after the alarm in trying to save belongings, Ignoring a dresser drawer with $140, Mrs. Browning
managed to rescue pictures
of her children, She had to
be forcefully removed from
building moments beforeitcollapsed.
Outside, Mrs. Browning
fainted from smoke inhalation and the effects of heat,
but she suffered noserbous
injuries.
Except for a few bundles of
clothing and some odds and
ends of badly scorched furniture, the Brownings lost
everything. They expressed
thanks, however, that no one
w as injured in fighting the
fire,
The family is staying with
their son BillJr. andhis wife,
also residents of Birchville
Rd. ,. while they plan to re4 build.
The loss of the home was
doubly tragic because it was
one that was rich in historicial value to the area.
The date of construction of
the original three rooms ‘is
not known, but it is believed
to have been about 1856.
A miner, Michael Farrelley, just over from Ireland,
bought the small house in
1862 and enlarged it by four
rooms, It remained in the
Farrelley family until 1955
when it was purchased bythe
Brownings.
Lucille Farrelley Smith told
some of the history that revolved around the home.
Thomas McGuire, father
of surveyor Carlos McGuire,
boarded with the family in
the year 1894 whilehe taught
schoolinFrench Corral. The
lot that the house was built on
wasthe first lot Thomas Mc-~
Guire pegged out when he became a surveyor,
TheBrowning home is one
of hundreds that has met the
same fate in the French Corral area sincethe days in the
mid -1800s that saw French

population,
