O The Nevada County Nugget Wednesday, June 7, 1 Renady 972 y S.-i By Fay M. Dunbar 273-2934 Remember Flag Day, June 14, Since 1777 when on this day Congress accepted the first red, white, and blue National Banner our Presidents have proclaimed this a national holiday. It is a day to be honored and appreciated. Few places in the world today have the freedom it exemplifies. That freedom comes in "small packages" as well as large ones, This fact brings to mind dozens of very pertinent quotes, Some of them are quite humorous but all are filled with meaning, There is one "Freedom is---a soprano singing the Star Spangled Banner off key and meaning every word of it," and it "is a man saying, Howdy stranger, without looking cautiously over his shoulder," or it is President Kennedy saying"---our country will match its military strength with our moral strength, its wealth with our wisdom, its power with our purpose.” I will never be quoted so I will take advantage of the freedom found in one of the "small packages" and repeat some worth while things. Fly your Flag on its big day. Fly her proudly from the highest pole you can find, She was born of great travail. Our forebearers suffered centuries of slavery, of mind as well as body, at the whims of the few. Our Flag is the emblem of freedom from the few. We are no longer subject to their whims, Or are we? Freedom is certainly not liberty. The Flag exemplifies our power "its power with our purpose" to quote President Kennedy. Wow! all I need now is a "soap box." These trying days I mean every word of it. Especially the "or are we" and "freedom is La liberty" part. * * * * Poor Father! Sunday June 11 is his day and I have put him in second place. I hope you won't at your house. Fathers these days are lost easily and some at very tender ages, Busi© ness pressures, caused to a large degree by the social pressure of everyone always wanting more things, are very heavy. Dad needs an extra thought or two anytime you can spare it. Fathers Day is an ideal time begin and to relax and take life a little eer: is * * * * Our Pat, the Lint Baler, says "everyone should want to be a winner.” She is right toa degree. Me I'm so "weak knee'd" that I'd rather lose than fight. It really is important tho' to remember some ground rules. The BIG TEN would cover them all, Number five, the "Honor thy Father---,"" is probably the best to remember for Father. Number ten is probably the best one to slow us down to being Christians again in our fight to win. Its the slowing down that applies most to Fathers Day. * * * * * Ruby of the Noble Thoughts had one that I thought would be good for older Fathers, Ruby didn't like AARP (American Association for Retired Persons) very much but that really proves Ruby is young at heart. Me, I'm getting OLDER, * * * * * * Homecoming Day at Malakoff Digins' State Historic Park is Sunday June 11 also, Daniel Beatie and I have been your representatives on the Citizens Advisory Committee for the Park for several years, Daniel will be away at college next year and is resigning. Orin Brown is taking his place. You would enjoy the peaceful old fashioned style of this celebration at your Park. The Grass Valley JCs are supplying hamburgers to keep you from starving if you don't bring a picnic basket but picnic facilities are ample and Family picnics are the order of the day. The Park is 26 miles from Nevada City. Turn off Hwy 49 at Tyler Road near North San Juan, This year the Homecoming is "Sunday in the Park" and St. Columcilles Church will hold services at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. There will be a band concert, a parade, games of horseshoe and croquet, and movies of the Hydraulic Mining which reached its peak at the Malakoff in olden days. * * * * *, * The Secession Days celebration here at home is Sunday June 25. Our celebration will be a bit noisier, The day starts at 7:00 a.m. with a hearty home cooked breakfast served by the Fats.”These lovely ladies know a good thing when they see (cook) it. There will be music, and fun, and games for the children, throughout the day. The ladies of the Fire Dept. Aux. will serve sandwiches etc, from 10:00 a.m. on, The ladies of the Grange will serve a Chicken Dinner at the Hall from 12:00 noon on, The buttons this year are the Flag of the Great Republic of Rough and Ready (rectangular) in color. Rough and Readys actors and actresses will have a real live stage, with sound, and scenery for their Melodramas this year, The Chamber will again sponsor a beer booth and a tour of t' «old Bunker Hill mine. k z * * * Rough and Readys FFA Star Farm is like the rest of Rough and Ready, Its a little rough about what develops even unintentionally. The Baers killed a Rattler, with 6 buttons, on their road last Friday. Rough but with 6 buttons, its just got to be what you call Star material. * * * * * Our -Fire Dept, Aux. has so many irons in the fire that they are going to make their regular meeting a bit of an unscheduled quickie. Some free moment they will get together and finish the Quilt for their Secession Day Raffle. Some other free moment they will hold another Tupperware Party to help replenish the treasury, The Recussitator even with the very successful Bakeless Bake Sale was quite a drain, Get your ESP on the ball and find out how and when help. ~ a * * * * * The Penn Valley Fire Dept. which services some of what is called Rough and Ready is sponsoring a luncheon on June 14 at 12:00 noon at the Penn Valley Fire House, The luncheon league of Sacramento will do the serving and the proceeds will all go to Fire Dept. funds if the ladies can qualify by obtaining 80 reservations, Reservations may be made with any member of the Penn Valley Fire Dept. Aux, or by calling 273-2506. The menu will be Chicken with wild rice and mushrooms and all the trimmings, There will be games and prizes, Buy Bonds where you work. PE oe
