Backward Search
For The Flagpole
A highway engineer who devised a backwards method of
locating a non-existing flagpole
has been presented the Governor's Silver Award for superior
accomplishmentby a state employee.
The coveted award went to
John W, Snell, an engineering
technician in the Division of
Highways district headquarters
at Marysville. He won it for his
volunteer role in getting the
State's restoration of historic
Fort Humboldt, overlooking
Eureka, back on the road following a frustrating two-year
delay, and for saying the State
several thousand dollars in the
process,
State Parks and Recreation Director Fred L, Jones, who had
recommended the award, presented it to Snell in a brief
ceremony in the Resources Building in Sacramento,
It all began when Snell overheard that Fort Humboldt's reconstruction as a state historical
monument was stalled because
nothing remained on the grounds
that could be used as a fixed
reference point for determining
the exact locations of the longvanished fort buildings,
To break this stalemate the
Division of Beaches and Parks
had planned this summer to
conduct an extensive archaeological dig of the area at an
estimated cost of $5,000,

On his own time and initiative, by researching old documents and maps in libraries,
Snell found that the fort's original flagpole had been used as
the anchor point of most early
day surveys of the Humboldt
County coast. If the exact site
of the flagpole could be determined the fort buildings could
be positioned, but its location
hadn't been known for decades.
Snell reasoned that by using
existing reference points outside the fort area, a backward
survey could pinpoint the flagpole site,
Using Snell's information, park
engineers ran the reversed survey and drove a stake at the
terminal point. Less than vo
inches away the archeologists
found a buried and disintegrated
fragment of the pole and the
hote in which it stood,
Now ably toexactly locate
the old fort buildings, the Division of Beaches and Parks can
get on with the reconstruction.
Governor Brown's 1966-67 budget, now before the legislation,
contains $40,000 for the initial
phase of the project,
