I‘mnot going to take them in order or accordingto prominence. If I did that, I'd be tempted to start with George F. McGlashan, lawyer, promoter, writer, General, historian, newspaper owner, jester, philospher , welll couldgoon, but let me say it simply, George Me Glashan, great spirit of Truckee. aS Inst ga@d I'll present_Mr. H.K. Gage, artist-photographer of Truckee, the man to whom we are indebted for. most of the early pictorial records of the town, the Central Pacific, lakes and mills, and many of the pioneers who lived on the other side of the “hump”. Herman Kimball Gage, Massachusetts man with an artist's curiosity for far-off places, took himself, in the 1870s, viathe Central Pacific cars, to California. Passing through Truckee he sniffed with keen appreciation its clean mountain air and continued down to Sacramento, his destination as noted on his ticket. The Sacramento river was brown and mudladen from the hydraulic diggings, the air blisteringly hot, even oppressive, thought Gage. He promptly returned to Truckee and went into the business of recording its life on wet-plates and film. He was whimsical with a pixie's sense of humor and a "heller" for the dramatic and splendid landscape. We~ see his sense of humor in the self portraits he took. Look _ atthe one as a gay bon-vivant and the other as atired” man -about -town. In the long panel we see him inaction "shooting" a 4th of July celebration from the corner of the Palace Grill against the background of his own gallery .
