Placer or Nevada County will spend six weeks in West Germany this summer as a Young Ambassador in Volkswagen's Youth Exchange program. The 11th annual exchange will enable 40 American and 40 German teenagers to trade families, homes and friends for the summer in order to develop greater internationa! wunderstanding through international living. The local sponsor is Laurie Felton, president of Placer Volkswagen on Highway 49 at Bell Road. Colfax, Del Oro, Placer and Nevada Union High Schools will select one finalist each cn the basis of scholarship, school and community activities and general interests. A committee of civic leaders from the two counties will review each student's records and conduct interviews before naming the Youth Exchange winner, in April. The German exchange student will arrive in California, July 11 and will spend several days with his or her exchange "brother" or "sister" before the local winner goes to Germany, The students will have a week together in Germany at the end of the summer. "I am pleased to sponsor this program for two reasons," states VW dealer Felton. "It rewards an outstanding local student with an excellent living and learning experience in Germany and it gives the local student's family and our community the chance of ‘adopting’ a foreign student for the summer."' The Volkswagen Youth Exchange program was started in 1962 because of the auto company's belief that the world's major companies should exchange more than ucts with foreign lands, "Our Peetle has carried people across strange borders and into new experiences and this program will enable a local Young Ambassador to do the same thing," Felton concluded.
