; ‘Pianists’ Finger Cramp.
Certain functional diseases of the hand
and arm have been observed in pianists b
Mr. Vivian Poore. This craihp of thi
pianiste he estimated to be eight times as
common as the cramp of writers; and he
finds especiaily liable to it those who
practice with the wrist continually held
rigid. The symptoms are pa nful stiffness
of the shoulder and of.the right arm, less
frequently of the left side, cramps of the
little finger, and of the ring finger,
sometimes with trembling—this distressing condition often persisting after
exercise with the keys, and being brought
back by the least exertion of hand or
fingers. Cold, sedentary habits, weakness
and predisposition to, rheumatism and gout
increase the liability to it.

A.Woman with a Memory.
A writer in the New York Times says:
“A most remarkable instance of memory
has just come tomy notice. Its possessor is
a lady member of Dr. Howard Crosby's

taken a single note she will, when she gocs
home, write out every word of her pastor’s
sermon, and she tells me shenever makes
a Inistake of a ‘the’ or an ‘and’—that every
sentence not only embodies his. idea, but
gives it in his exact language.. For twentyfive years this lady has been performing
these feats of memory, and during that
time she has written out-some two thousand sermons. The manuscripts of some
of them she has had bourid—and presented _. ‘

[8. F. Chronicle, Jan. 1, 1889. .
_ Nevada county claims special attention as one of the few counties of Californiain which the three principal {ndustries of the State—mining, agriculture and liorticulture—are extensively
carried on side by side. The county
is accessible by ruil, the Central Pacific Railroed running along its southern boundary. a considerable distance,
and crossitig its extreme eastern end,
while the Nevada County Narrow
Gauge Railroad intersects its central
portion, extending north from Colfax
to Nevada City and” passing through
Grass Valley in its*route: Geograpbically the county lies a trifle north of
the central line of the State, and extendsfrom the Sacramento valley on
the west to and beyond the summit of
the Sierra Nevada. :
In the western portion the altitude
averages some 1300 feet above the Bea
level, and the surface consists of gently sloping hills and ridges with here
and there large sized tracts of comparatively level land. In the central
section is the upper part of the horticultural belt, and here also are most
of the great quartz and gravel mines
which haye since pioneer days been
yielding such vast quantities of-gold.
The eastern extremity is very mountuinous in character, the principal industries thereof being lumbering, iceshipping and grazing. About 250,000
acres of land are contained in the Korticultural belt of the county, which includes the townships of Nevada, Grass
Valley; Rough and Ready and Bridgeport. : :
A great variety of productions is insured within these limits, Fruits and
vegetables: maturing early, or requir
ing a long and warm. season, thrive
south where the rays of the sun have.
full foree; while the larger and_ more
slowly_maturing fruits—flourish on the
cooler and more moist lands with a
northern exposure. The valley lands
between the ridges and hills have. in
and though well furnished with water
from springs and streams aye not as
‘well calculated for fruit growing as for
the production of hay and pasturage.
Among the most profitable fruits to-be
raised here is the pear, which is followed closely by the apple, both attaining in Nevada county the greatest
perfection in size, flavor and keeping
qualities. Grape growing is rapidly
becoming an important industry here,
this being the natural home of the
vine. Nevada county port wine has
already in two comipetitive exbibitions
where the principal wine-prodacing
sections were represented, earned the
first prize, and other varieties of wine
shown have stood high in thelist of
successful’ competition. The olive
thrives here, attaining perfection in
size-and quality. In the extreme lower portions of the county the orange is
profitably grown, the fruit maturing
unusually early and a full crop being
generally obtained.
No county in the State is more abundantly watered. Mining and irrigation
lakes in the higher altitudes, thread
all sections. This water is of the purest, and the supply never fails, The
Climate has an invigorating freshness
arid salubrity that is not to be found
in lower lands. Thére are no fogs, no
blizzards, no malaria: Large numbers
of people come annually from the seacoast and valleys to spend the .summers here, and thus rebuild their
shattered constitution,
Vulley are located such well-known
and productive quartz mines as the
Providence, Nevada City, Wyoming,
Pittsburg, Neversweat, Idaho, Empire,
North Stagz,,and many others. The
princip d eRims are equipped with the
most modern machinery for mining
years rapidly rising into prominence .

others «re destined to soon become
