AN OLD INDIAN STORY
John Silver Cloud’s
Effects Are Loaned
To Indian Museum
The residents of Nevada City
* have become the beneficiaries of
friendliness ofan Indian who
called the city home for many
years,
The proposed Indian Museum
being constructed by the Nevada
County Archaeological Society
on Commercial Street has received a suitcase full of beautiful Iroquois Ihdian costumes for
display.
The Indian outfits have been
loaned to the museum by Guy
Robinson of Indian Springs who
knew, employed and befriended
the owner, John Silver Cloud
Green.
The feather head dress, the
bead vests and other parts of the
costume of a chief, belonged to
Green's father, Silver Eagle,
chief of the Iroquois Nation.
Green was born on the Seneca
Reservation in New York State.:
He was graduated from Carlisle
University in Pennsylvania where
he became a friend of the great
Indian athlete, Jim Thorpe.
He served in the army during
World War I and brought back a
chest full of medals to the reservation in upstate New York,
Green came to Nevada City
some 40 years ago and for 25 of
those years he worked for Guy
Robinson on his Indian Springs
ranch, He was also employed by
Harold Gleason on his ranch in
the Penn Valley.
Green will be remembered by
old timers in this area as the Indian in full chief's dress leading
the July 4th parades in Nevada
City, the annual Cherry Festival
paradein North San Juan and the
Auburn parades,
When he became ill he passed
his pictures, beautiful head dress
chief's outfit and his medals on to
his friend Guy Robinson.
TheRobinson family took care
of Green untilhe died about three
years ago at the age of 67.
Robinson has n ow passed the Indian dress on to Marge Matusovic
of Nevada City for restoration,
When the feathers and beads are
returned totheir proper places and
the leather work is restored, the
full outfit will be displayed in the
proposed museum on Commercial
Street.
The Indian outfit which came
alltheway from upper New York
State will now be housed in historic Nevada City for the view of
the children of the city and visitors to this old gold town.
GREEN IS shown here in his father's
full chief's regalia after he came
to Nevada County. It is believed
that this picture was taken somewhere in the Indian Springs area.
