CITIZEN LET’S ALL BE CONSERV ATIONISTS California still has abundant natural resources but the time is long past when we can be indifferent about how they are used or harvested. The 25th annual observance of California Conservation Week this week (March 7-14) prompts this thought. Sa California has the largest remaining stand of virgin timber in America but the timber industry already has felt it necessary to adopt practices suchas sustained yield cutting and tree farming to insure a perpetually adequate supply. _ Soil conservation is being encouraged to check erosion of our thin, precious layer of topsgil. We are doing something but still not enough about co: ing our precious water, both on the surface and underground. = ee ain We are probably not working fast enough to conserve all the recreational areas that California’s Auge population ' will need only a few years hence. SAN FRANCISCO HOSTS WILDERNESS CONFERENCE ._ San Francisco will be the focal point next week (March 20-21) for a meeting of many national leaders of the movement to preserve substantial portiotis of America’s remaining wilderness areas. i The occasion will be the Sixth Biennial Wilderness Conference, sponsored by the Sierra Club and other conservation. organizations. The theme of the Conference will be “The Meaning of Wilderness to Science”, emphasizing the scientific value of preserving small islands of primitive land as natural laboratories, . 2 Legislation has been introduced in Congress to establish a National Wilderness Preservation System. Controversial, the legislation is opposed by timber operators, miners, stockmen, oil prospectors and other resource developers. Conservationists are united behind it. The Wilderness Conference in San Francisco will advance the scientific argument for the conservationist’s case, other aspects of which are esthetic, recreational and (just to cite a one years away, America will have an estimated population of 321,000,000 persons ‘and all their landscape cluttering works’ as a national writer recently put it. e many ways in which Americans express their belief in the Golden Rule is their support of causes that seek . ‘to bring relief from the disasters of life. sonumental embodiment of man’s love.of his fellow in dis28s, has instinctive desire to as mangled manieh in a rather different, but ‘no less Starting in the local courts makassuage another’s misfortune as 8 ans’ organization; born of a cau cus in states: PROCLAMATION doms, and its birth March 15-17, 1959, mark. ing the completion -.of four decades of patriotic labors which have had great and beneficial impact on the welfare and sceurity of America; “Now, therefore, I, William’ E.
