A TAXPAYER BLOWS HIS TOP
My Dear Sirs: :
In reply to your request to send a check, I wish to inform
you that the present condition of my bank account makes italmost impossible. My shattered financial condition is due
to federal laws, state laws, county laws, city laws, corporation
laws, liquor laws, mother-in-laws, brother-in-laws, sister-inlaws, and outlaws. ;
Through these laws I am compelled to pay a business tax,
amusement tax, head tax, school tax, gas tax, light tax, _income tax, sales tax, food tax, furniture.tax and excise tax.
Even my brains are taxed. _ I am required to get .a business
license, car license, hunting and fishing license, truck license
and dog license. :
I am also required to contribute to ever society and organizaiton which the genius of man is. capable of bringing to
life; to women’s relief, the unemployed’ relief and the gold
digger’s relief.. Also to. every hospital and charitable institution in fhe city, including the Red Cross, the black cross,
the purple cross and the double cross.
For my own safety I am required to carry life insurance,
property insurance, liability insurance, burglar insurance, accident insurance, business insurance, earthquake insurance,
tornado insurance, unemployment insurance, old age and fire
insurance. My business is so governed that it is no easy
matter for me to find out who owns it. I am inspected, sus‘pected, disrespected, rejected, dejected, examined, reexamin_ed, informed, required, mmoned, /fined, commanded
compelled until I provide an inex stible supply of
for every known need of the hum&én race.
Simply because I refuse to donate to somethin r OF
I am boycotted, talked about, lied about, held up, held down,
and robbed until Iam almost ruined. I can tell you honestly
that except for the miracle that happened, I could not-enclose
this check. The wolf that comes to many doors nowadays,
just had pups in my kitchen. “I sold them and here is the
money.
Yours faithfully,

LET’S ALL BE CONSERV ATIONISTS
California still has abundant natural resources but the
time is long past when we can be indifferent about how they
are used or harvested. The 25th annual observance of California Conservation Week this week (March 7-14) prompts
this thought. Sa
California has the largest remaining stand of virgin
timber in America but the timber industry already has felt it
necessary to adopt practices suchas sustained yield cutting
and tree farming to insure a perpetually adequate supply. _
Soil conservation is being encouraged to check erosion of
our thin, precious layer of topsgil. We are doing something
but still not enough about co: ing our precious water, both
on the surface and underground. = ee ain
We are probably not working fast enough to conserve all
the recreational areas that California’s Auge population ' will
need only a few years hence. The acquisition program of

._ San Francisco will be the focal point next week (March

Meaning of Wilderness to Science”, emphasizing the scientific value of preserving small islands of primitive land as natural laboratories, . 2
Legislation has been introduced in Congress to establish
a National Wilderness Preservation System. Controversial,
the legislation is opposed by timber operators, miners, stockmen, oil prospectors and other resource developers. Conservationists are united behind it.
The Wilderness Conference in San Francisco will advance
the scientific argument for the conservationist’s case, other
aspects of which are esthetic, recreational and (just to cite a
