Miss, Barbara Young of Australia, Cumnock, New South
Wales, talked about her homeland and showed beautiful colored slides of the area at the
dinner meeting of the Rough
and Ready Fire Dept. Auxiliary
last Monday ‘night. Miss Young
is an exchange student and is
living with the Bacharack family
of Colfax while she attends high
school there. She was attending
Abbotsleith Girls School in Sidney before her acceptance as
an exchange student. She is 16
years old and a most accomplished young lady. She has some
very definite convictions about
her homeland and its future.
She is also familiar with its
past, particularly the Gold Rush
period which was about 3 years
later than our own here in Cal»lfornia, Barbara's impression
of it was that if an American
hadn't come across the gold,
which the Australians already
knew about, it would have been
more efficiently developed at a
more opportune time for Australia's economy. Our own gold
discoveries, of course, were

"opportune" for the Civil War.
She tells us there is a Rough
and Ready, Australia. This we
shall have to find out more about.
She displayed areal understanding of Australia's sheep business
and of its water problems. She
spoke of a game the youngsters
play called Coconut Shine. It
turns out to be our own game
of hitting the can with a rock.
Only difference being they use
coconuts in place of rocks, Australia is bisected by the Tropic
of Capricorn, which is the same
distance from the Equator as the
Tropic of Cancer which bisects
Mexico at Mazatlan, so you know
it's hot enough to grow coconuts
plentifully.
Miss Young is very impressed
by America, It took a great deal
of effort on her part to win
what she considers this excellent
opportunity. She is already looking forward to next June and her
6-weeks tour of America and
visit to Washington, D.C. where
she will meet the president.
She attributes her ‘liking for
our particular area to the fact
that it is similar to her own
home. She lives in the "Great
Dividing Range", Australia's
mountain area, about 150 miles
inland from the ocean, Cumnock
has more rainfall than most of
Australia and like our own Rough
and Ready, even some snow.

Something new has been added
at the Mobile Homes Park or
should I say 360 somethings new.
It seems the law requires that
"Lagoons" be fenced and since
the fence didn't turn out to be
beautiful the Bradleys have
planted 360 rose bushes to cover
it. There were a few left from
the lagoon and these have been
planted up front. Imagine planting 360 rose bushes!
