than an ordinary quartz mine, and

“But,” said Robinson, » ‘technically
they are violating Sawyer’s decree,
but no more so than drift and quartz
mines generally,and the valley people
will not interfere with them.” Under

of the Sims’ salary bill. If the matter
had been proposed during the ‘campaign, and Mr. Sims: expressed himself in favor of it, he would have been
defeated by many hundred votes.
What the object is of attempting to
pass such an obnoxious bill is not apparent. Mr. Sims should withdraw
‘the bill if he: desires the good will of
his constituents.
Saturday was the coldest night of
the season, the thermometer reaching 20° above zero. On Sunday there’
was real spring weather. At night
above zero, and yet our people grumbled terribly about cold weather.
Those who complain about. that temperature ought to make a short visit
east of the Rockies where they will.

brought in the United States Circuit
Court against the Milton Mining and
Water Company of Nevaila county for
an alleged defiance of the orders of the
Circuit Court enjoining defendants
from washing hydraulic debris into the
streams. The contempt case was submitted to Master in Chancery Houghton last Monday, but:no decision has
yet been rendered. In giving his testimony Howard is said to have made
Some remarkable statements, which
form the basis of the perjury ‘préceedings against him.” ,
In the face of this, before a decision
is given by the’court, two more suits
have recently been commenced, making the same charges as in the first
case. This seems unaccountable, except that the anti-debris people detest
L, L. Robinson, one of the largest
mine owners and President of the
Miners’. Association. If the matter
were sifted to the bottom it would be
found that these last suits were commenced out of spite, the complainant
knowing that the expense of a defense
would amount to several thousand
dollars, and %.L. Robinson would
thereby be cinched. This is just
aboutsthe size of the whole business
on the part of the valleyites:
A New Irrigating Ditch.
H.B. Wheaton, President and General Manager of the Excelsior Water
and Mining Company, -was ‘in town
yesterday. The Company have concluded to build about three miles moré
-of irrigating ditch in Rough and
Ready township, so as to enable the
cultivation of that portion of the county
known as west side of Kentucky ridge
and embracing some of the best agricultural land in this part of the State.
The new ditch will head at the Newtown reservoir. It will have a capacity
of about 600 inches, and the water for
it will be taken out of Deer creek about
@ quarter of a mile above the Merrifield
mine and pass down through the old
Newtown ditch, which has been unused for years but traverses a fine section of country which has long been .
the musical entertainment in conjunetion therewith, advertised to take
place at the Theater tonight under the’
management of Mrs. Farley, . will
doubtless attract a good-sized audience.
The numerous ladies and _ gentlemen who have volunteered to assist in
giving the program are among the
most able and popular amateurs of the
county, and the parts assigned to them
are in every instance such as they are
particularly happy in. Reserved seats
can be secured at Vinton’s without.extra charge.
Colonies for Northern California.
G. E. Brand returned Sunday. from
San Francisco, where he has been for
several days in the interest of the Nevada County Land Association. Mr.
Brand says everybody interested is
counting on a large immigration to
Northern and Central California’ during the Summer, and active measures
are being taken to have many large
tracts divided up and colonized.on the
plan that has proved so successful in
settling Southern California.
