Thursday walk under the tail section of a KC-135, aerial tanker with a B-52 visible
in the background. Beale had a lovely sunny day for their first open house in
about five years. Many Grass Valley residents attended.

$400,000 flight suit. The aircraft flies at such high altitudes and speed that the
astronaut-type suit is necessary. :
Berryhill will co-authormandatory sentence bill
Senator Clare Berryhill
representing the mountain
counties, including Nevada
County, announced today he will
coauthor Senate Bill 237
requiring mandatory prison
sentences for all convicted
heroin peddlers and armed
felons. oo.
Referring to the disparity. in
court sentences, the lawmaker
claimed the problem is the
result of penalty adjustments
made’ by different judges
throughout the state.
“I am not opposed to court
discretion when properly used,”
stressed Berryhill, ‘‘but there is
a lack of congruity in our courts,
and too convicted criminals are
back on the streets after trial.”
Pointing out that less than 20
per cent of those convicted of
selling hard drugs last: year
received prison sentences,
Berryhill commented it is time
that those convicted of
dangerous crimes must Know
beforehand that they will serve
a mandatory prison sentence.
“This law is not intended to
take discretionary powers away
from our judges,” said the State
Senator, “but to make. the
criminal responsible for his own
actions and to protect the
welfare of innocent people.”

Pacific Gas and Electric
Company announced today that
it is participating in a nationwide service surveillance
program to improve consumer
satisfaction with gas appliances
and equipment.
Known as the Gas Appliance
Improvement Network (GAIN),
the new program will utilize
appliance service reports of 50
gas utilities throughout the
country, according to E.F.
Sibley, PG&E vice presidentgas operations.
The program is being coordinated by the American Gas
Association and the Gas Appliance
Association.
The test region selected within
the PG&E system is the high:
customer density. Bay Area,
including San Francisco, East
Bay and San Jose, said Sibley.
“When one of our gas servicemen discovers a major gas
appliance defect, xhis. local
company office will forward his
report to the company’s gas
utilization department in San
Francisco,’’ Sibley said.
“Each report will be analyzed
to help determine any

was the installing officer for
Cootiette Clubs and Don

A turkey dinner was served
before the ceremony, held in the
Nevada City Veterans Memorial
Hall. The Golden Canaries will
next meet on Monday.

G&E joins new gas
aid users
developing trend or pattern of
deficiency in the production,
design .or performance of
specific appliances.
“If such a pattern is
discovered, PG&E will report it
to the manufacturer. If the
manufacturer is not represented
in this area, PG&E will forward
the report to another utility
company which maintains
liaison with the manufacturer.
There are 18 contact utilities,
each responsible for liaison with
a designated group of gas appliance manufacturers in its
geographic area.”
‘The new network, according
to Sibley, is a completely
and appliance manufacturers to
increase consumer satisfaction
with gas and gas appliances.
One of theprogram’s
staunchest supporters is Mrs. °
Virginia H. Knauer, special
assistant to President Nixon for
consumer affairs. ‘‘This
program will provide immediate and long-term advantages to the consumer as
well as to the industry,”’ Mrs.
Knauer told the American Gas
Association.
AGA laboratories were
established 50 years ago to test
appliances for compliance with
national safety standards. The
AGA Blue Star seal is widely
recognized and appears today
on more than 90 per cent of all
gas appliances marketed in the
United States.
The new network is an
outgrowth of this testing
program and is designed as a
more efficient response to the
industry’s desire to provide
consumer satisfaction with the
more complex and sophisticated
gas appliances now on_ the
market, Sibley added.
