Debra Morphew, Beth Johnson
and Vickie Hastings started a
personal physical fitness program on March 6 by walking to
school, Noticing all the garbage
and trash littering Colfax Highway, they decided to organize an
"ecology walk", A clean-up day,
to fight pollution. They made an
announcement in each of the
classrooms at Union Hill
School, All interested students
were invited to join them in the
project.
Last Saturday, 44 youngsters
met at the First Baptist Church
in Cedar Ridge. They left
promptly at 10 a.m. Dick Towle
loaned them a wheeled trash
hauler, Mike Griffin, Terri
Piver, Derren Jackson and
Channon Grumbling formed the
front and rear guard, carrying
slow down signs, garbage cans
and watched out for cars, Others
carried posters, One showed,
two ducks flying over a littered
landscape. The caption read,
"Granpa said that you used to
be able to see the ground.”
"From what I understand," replied the other duck, "it isn't
much to see no way." Another
poster read, "Don't litter, Clean
it up. If you don't do it, it won't
get done."
The four-mile trek was made
by Tom Roland, Jim andCarrlea

told them he would meet them
in the park at noon and provided
pizza for their lunch, A delighted and weary group relaxed in
the park at noon, "We weren't
expecting to get anything for
this," voiced Terry Piver. "I
wanted to--", said Jana Sintek.

Peardale-Chicago Park Volunteer firemen were called to
three fires last month that turned out to be controlled burns.
Fire Chief Carl Bauch asks
the cooperation of everyone in
the district to prevent such false
alarms. If you plan a sizeable
burn please advise the sheriff's
office. Then anyone reporting the
fire, believing it to be uncontrolled, can be assured all is
well,
When reporting a fire, be
specific in your directions, Last
week someone reported one "a
quarter mile south ofthe store."
There are two stores in the district. This turned out to be a
controlled burn.
An abandoned fire, fanned by
the wind, was stopped in its
path through undergrowth in
dense woods toward a cabin
Saturday. The call to the PCP department came in at 3:30
p.m. Two trucks and eight men
responded. The fire was located
at the corner of Mosswood Lane
and Colfax Highway on the Hyatt
property. No loss reported.
I have been asked to review
the history of the local fire department. It was organized by
Peardale people on July 27;
1954. The first chief was Ed
Cochran with Don Phillips assistant chief; Clifford Goff
treasurer and Mildred Brock
secretary.
Directors were Carl Brock,
chairman; Thorp Sawyer, Harold
Cron, Herb Stock and Walter
Koerber.
The following September Art
Ring donated a truck that he had
used in his excavation business
in Walnut Creek. The department paid $75 for a 500 gallon
tank and Frank Jacuzzi donated
a pump.
As a token of esteem for
Cochran, a past fire chief of
Richmond, that city gave hima
siren, two spotlights, hose and .
reel and other equipment.
Ida Hatton donated land in
1954 and in 1955 the Peardale
firehouse was built.
Chicago Park joined the department and Jack Mills loaned
land by the Chicago Park Store
in 1960 to be used to build a
second firehouse.
On April 10, 1961 16 women
of the Peardale and Chicago Park
areas met at the home of Isobelle Huber for the purpose
of organizing a ladies auxiliary.
Eunice Carse was the first president; Sibyl Leuteneker, vice
president; Barbara Durney, secretary; Joyce Felce, treasurer.
The first regular meeting was
held at the home of Barbara
Durney on May 8, 1961. Here
the name of "Fire Belles" was
adopted.
Since that time the department has gone on the tax rolls
as the Peardale-Chicago Park
Fire Protection District. Other
progress has been reported in
recent columns,
Firemen will hold a benefit
breakfast at the Peardale Firehouse this Sunday, March 19,
7 a.m. until 1 p.m. Proceeds
will "go for a new air pack. .
This Wednesday, Thursday
and Friday, Chicago Park
‘School's basketball team, that
of Colfax and five other teams
from Nevada county schools are
involved in a tournament in the
Empire Gym. The championship
game will be held Friday night
at 7 p.m.
Capt. Charles Sovey went to
Ft. Rucker, Alabama last week
to ferry a helicopter to Stockton, He returned to Chicago
Park Monday. Daughter Christy
was home from Chico State College for the weekend. Anne and
her husband, Tyler Jones of
Paradise, weekended here also.
Just got half of Ernie and
Grace Coleman's news in last
week. While Grace's sister,
Wanda Painter, held the fort
here, the Colemans pulled their
trailer down to Pleasant Hill
where they "launched" their new
grandson and visited friends.
Later they went to Monterey to
relax and play a little golf by
the sea. They returned home
last week. Wanda left for her
Chevy Chase, Maryland home
Wednesday.
