District Attorneys of Nevada ©
County for the past century
The Nugget in keeping with the spirit
of an election year is presenting a series
‘of stories dealing with the history of elective county offices and names of Nevada
countyans who have held them, The in-formation is gleaned from !"100 years oj
Nevada County” published in 1951, and
duties and the roster of names associated
with them have changed considerably sincethe publication date,
Prosecution of all felonies, misdemeanors committed in the county, and all civil
cases in which the county has an interest
or is a party are the business of the district attorney, Vernon Stoll of Grass Valley. (He later became Superior Court
Judge and is now retired.)
Prosecution, filing of information andother litigation concerning criminal cases
is the duty of Stoll and his deputy, William -J. Cassettari.
They represent the county in civil
actions, issue opinions requested by various departments of county government,
prepare legal phases of county and school
bond issues, handle condemnation suits,
and probate matters, The great bulk of the
' district’ attorney's work is in the criminal
and civil divisions,
Domestic relations comprise the third
and final division, and includes cases of ~
failure to provide for support of a family
and similar issues in the unincorporated
areas of the county.
The district attorney is elected by-the
citizens of the county, and the deputy is
appointed by the district attorney.
