given local residents

and pulled, andalthough
the buildings madea
gallant effort tostand
their ground it was not
long until the tracks of

over piles of rubble that
had been structures. A
big bon-fire finished
much of the leveling job.

A staff assistant of the Califor‘nia County Supervisors Associationtolda Grass Valley audience
Friday that for the first time a
policy has been adopted for
county governments by county
representatives.
T he. speaker, Charles Broadhurst, spoke before the recreation
committee of the SacramentoMother Lode Supervisors" quarterly meeting. ,
Broadhurst said a-recent meeting of the National Association of
County Officials held in Hawaii
resolved that it is the county's
responsibility to acquire, develop
and operate parks and recreation
areas which serve areas larger
thansmall communities and that
counties should cooperate.with
cities where feasible to develop
recreation areas,
The proposed $150 million
Beaches and Parks bond issue to
be voted on by Californians this
year will provide $40 million to
~ . the counties for park land acquisition, Broadhurst said. Nevada
County will be eligible for a
minimum grant of $75,000 under
this program, he said. Counties
national park and recreationgewhich cooperate with neighboring
areas in regional recreational
planning will be eligible for additional funds. In no case, Broad_-hurst pointed out, will counties
be eligible ‘for funds if they do
nothave general plans for recreational development.
Broadhurst then listed nine
federal programs which will assist
counties in recreational development. These range from “rural
renewal" loans to outright grants
for open space acquisition, under
federal housing law. For most of
these programs, also, counties
must have general development
plans before their applications
will be considered, he said.
