VOLUME 50 % Wednesday, March 19, 1975 10 Cents A Copy Bonnie Asher wants position on Grass Valley police force Bonnie S. Asher wants to pe a Urass Valley Police Reserve Officer and after sending a letter charging discrimination to Legal Advisor Brad Ellsworth she may get her chance. “ . Miss Asher, a student at Sierra College, applied for’ a position in the reserves and after taking a test was told she must complete a training program: sponsored by the Placer County Sheriff’s Department. After doing this she took an oral test and was told she scored 90 per cent. Then came notification that -she would not be considered for the position because Article 2 of the code says that the police reserves are open to men only. , “Police Chief Vince Seck told councilmen Tuesday that “this was bound _ to come up sooner or later and I’m sure it can be worked out.” He indicated that a number of other changes need to be made so after study they will all be taken care of in one package. ' Miss Asher said she wants nothing more than to be a Grass Valley Reserve because she feels she can be a great help to . the city. She indicated that ‘‘small town problems” can be dealt with more individually than the massive action required in big cities. } She said she is not a big supporter of GRASS VALLEY MAYOR Ed Tellam, left, presented information to U.S. womens’ liberation but that she feels the code is unfair and that she should be given a chance to compete for a position on the reserves on her own merits. ‘“‘Women are being admitted as officers in police departments throughout the state,” the letter stated. — While Chief Seck’s answer will probably be good news for Miss Asher,
Fire Chief Ed-Abraham also has good * news for Grass Valley’s 71 firemen. The council approved a new insurance policy for the department which will take effect immediately. ; The policy calls for payment of $2! weekly instead of $70 in the old policy and a $10,000 accidental death clause. The old policy didn’t provide for accidental death. Cost to the city will be $591 a year with a pro-rated amount to be paid for the period between Tuesday and June 30 so that a new policy can be started on July 1 to accomodate the city’s fiscal year. The old policy will also be retained until June 30 which will give firemen double coverage until then. Autidor-Treasurer Larry Farrell said money for the insurance was not available except in unbudgeted reserves so councilmen voted to take it from that category. The policy is with New Hampshire Co. with John Brown the agent of record. Congressman Harold T. "Bizz" Johnson Friday regarding a federal grant the city wishes to obtain as part of the public works improvement program. Johnson, seated in truck, will apply for the grant, of which $62,000 will be from the government and $60,000 from the city's general fund. If received, it will be used for construction of a new firehouse on Butler Street. Fire Chief Ed Abrahams and fire mascot, "Crash", are shown seated on the truck, called "Seagrave." GRASS VALLEY Councilman and past Chief of Police Frank Knuckey is busily preparing his ‘secret recipe" for a cake to be auctioned off at the 4-H jitney dinner at 7 p.m. Friday at the Grass Valley Veterans’ Memorial Building. The evening's events are being sponsored by the Nevada County 4-H Council to raise funds to send 10 delegates from here to a citizenship course in Washington, D.C: this summer. John Reed will be auctioneer for the cakes to be baked by 19 local men. SSeS eS 5 5 VO ' er NGRVUOYS r ii Fal Va Vo bIes6
