By November of 1853, on the occasion of a visit by Archbishop Alemany of San Francisco. to confer confirmation on a large ation here, it was obvious that Father Shanahan’s health was not good enough to warrant his remaining here much longer. So he accepted, humbly but with deep sadness the ordered transfer to the Bay Area and lesser duties. His work up here had included missions in not only this county, but in parts of Sierra, Yuba and Placer counties..entailing much rigorous travel and many hardships. The great fire of July 19, 1856, claimed St. Peter’s Catholic Church and it was succeeded by an even more prepossessing edifice called Saints Peter and Paul. Sad to relate, only seven years later..n November 8, 1863, the fire alarm sounded once more and once more a handsome church was reduced to rubble and ashes before the eyes of its priest and members of the congregation. After a number of changes the present brick edifice was built in 1864 by Father Griffin, who named the new church St. Canice after the famous. cathedral of the same name in his native county of Kilkenny, Ireland. 3 This church remained a mission of Grass Valley until 1867, when it came under the jurisdiction of the Rev. Father J. Claire, who also took over the mission in Omega, Red Dog and the little settlements along San Juan Ridge.Pastors who followed Father Claire included Father Maher (1873); Father McNulty (1874); Father Tanahm (1886); Father O'Kane (1891); then Father Claire returned to Nevada City about 1892 and Father Clyne assumed parish duties in 1895 or 1896 (the records are a bit unclear on that point).
